eh? a lot of japanese animations get jacked up after translations... and something tells the japanese version's alternate ending might make a liiittle more sense than this?

You must be talking about the Japanese version.
In the UK VHS version there is US dubbed the ending is Rauh winning.
It is in the Japanese talking version i have that ending you mention.
According to Imdbs trivia it is your ending that is the moore rare.
The American ending is mouch better.
(And the whole US version for that matter.)
And makes mouch moore sense. In that version Ken is as good as dead as what that can be seen. No realy matter to smash that lifeless body anymoore.
The alternate ending is wery stupid. Only need to write what you writen.
And Ken in the frame where Rauh is walking away Kens part looks like it has bien Pasted in. It dident look good at all.
