anyone else think it just sucked?

Listen, it's not like it was the worst anime ever but a rip-off of mad max (blatant rip-off, I might add) with a ripped-off mad max plot with scanners walking around poking people until their hearts and heads explode makes for kind of a retarded movie. And the animation pretty much resembles something on a saturday morning cartoon from the 80s. To that one guy who even suggested it: it's not on par with Akira, not even by a long shot. The drawing is great and that's it. Now let me tell you how I really felt about it.

Re: Your criticism that the animation looks like something from the 80s - might it have something to do with it being made in the 80s?

This isn't the greatest Anime ever, it's not even in the top ten (Akira being at #1), and it is pretty much a blatant rip off of Mad Max.

But it's *beep* ace. A guilty pleasure.

It's true that the Mad Max influences are heavy - Kenshiro even looks like an oriental Mel Gibson, and dresses simillar to max in the first movie - but is that such a bad thing? Naturally, elements of old stories will recur in new ones - stories are how we make sense of the world, and the reuse of common themes is a millenia old tradition. Yes, the animation is crude compared to the more recent remakes, but for me there is a sense of nostalgia in that - it was a simpler time, with simpler cartoons. I have never really warmed to most anime - too much mad sci-fi - but I was hooked on Fist of the North Star as soon as I saw the first episode.

I think the creator said his intent was to make Mad Max staring Bruce Lee. This was his intent all along.

The movie did suck, but it was fun to watch ridiculous violence. I loved it.

I love this movie. Its a masterpiece. Extreme violent, but some movies should be that. The ideas with Ken and Rays powers are fantastic. Also the caracter designs. Also the story a fantastic. And great voice actors.
The second best movie ever made in my opinion. Haves also the most head explotions in movie history.

"it's not on par with Akira, not even by a long shot."
Youre absolutely right. Fist of the North Star is better.
Even tough Akira is a classic and a fantastic movie to.

Dawn of the Dead ´78 is the best movie ever.

bullshiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit...

FotNS is a great movie though. The other guy was stupid for the ill-thought-out comments he made. But... better than Akira? Whaaaat?! Take a break from the pot, I know it's good but I'm taking a break too and sometimes that can be a good thing...

reply

Tjurskit? For you, but not for me.

Pot? I that have never even ever have become drunk, i dont Smoke either.
My father and Grandfather are alcholoics, so drugs is the last thing i would ever touch. I have learned from their BIG mistakes.
Its a matter of opinion, everyone likes different movies.

Dawn of the Dead ´78 is the best movie ever.

I'm not taking a break from pot and I could still tell how awful Fist of the North Star was! That's not to say it wasn't entertaining as hell, but it was a ridiculous rip off of Mad Max that made no sense what-so-ever. Luckily, someone's heade exploded every 5 minutes.

Deffinately a winner in the campy-80's-ultra gorey anime competition, but not good by any reasonable measure.

Here is the problem with this film...

It lacks excitement.

Every fight in this movie is badass > weakling with the exception of the last fight... but by then it's too late to save this movie. It becomes repetitive and boring for so long that by the time you get to the end you're barely awake and barely interested.

But the art is fantastic in it's originality and fluid frames. Alot of care went into this but it's the writing that killed it.

reply

I understand why you think so, but i dont agree. I love the irony of Ken wins every fight so easy, and loses hes last (!)

Dawn of the Dead ´78 is the best movie ever.

Did anyone think Akuma/Gouki from the Street Fighter series resembles Raol while Ryu resembles Kenshiro? Fist of the North Star turned into... the Dark Hadou. LOL!

I like this although some of the episodes just drag on, and all those bosses, lords and emporers were hilarious! They were absolutely psycho and I thought it was really funny how they would yell something in Japanese for 5 minutes and then in English subtitles it would say one or two words. I like this series because it is brutal, bloody and violent, but some of it was like a soap opera. I really did like the music though, there were some really cool melodies, like when something terrible happened or someone had sad memories. I thought it was really funny how they would freeze the screen when someone did a special move and it would translate it into something ridiculous like fist of lingering regret or something like that. It definitely is one of my favorite Anime series, and I love the old school feeling it has since it is from the 80's.

"Where's the strong box you f!!kin' varmint, you?"

I like Fist of the North Star more than Akira.

Akira had too many plot holes and problems because it was made before the manga was even completely written. But most people have the Akira blinders on because it was the first manga ever to become popular in the USA.

reply

Of course it sucks! That's the beauty of it! It's awful, but in a very entertaining way.
How can you not love the grotesque character designs, the grossly over-the-top violence, the corny dialogue and (most of all) hilariously awful American dubbing?
I always say "Listen, asswipe!" to my cousin when I'm trying to get his attention.

Umm, no. FOTNS Rocks
