Normally I tend to prefer watching Anime in Japanese with subtitles to get a better undestanding of the original character personas and story element, but when it comes to this movie I find that the English audio is much more entertaining.
The script is just too serious in the Japanese version, but in the English dub most of it has been replaced with great one liners.
For me its animé to animé. Depending.

Japanese original are also to phoetic. John Vickery are true excelent as Ken.
They did also change hes name only to Ken that are much better in my opinion than Kenshiro. Many fantastic quotes to, to bad they are not here on Imdb

Well after I finally got to that line, I rewound the dvd by a little bit and switched to the japanese audio and english subtitle tracks, out of curiosity. Do you wanna know how they translate the original japanese into english subtitles? "Your woman is under my care now."

I agree wholeheartedly! They must have been struck by some sort of genius bug during the english dubbing of this film.
I was going to look further into this Anime/Manga, but from what i can tell, the style and humour from the English dub are unique in the series. DAMN!!
Ah well, i'll just watch it again for the 36th time tonight. :)
The japanese voices = great
A lot of stuff is cut in the english dubbing, I remember watching it some time ago. The voices are ok (not Akira Kamiya-good but ok)but a lot of music is cut and the atcha/hidebu sounds are IIRC dubbed (wtf?)
The best dubbed version for Hnk (this is the case for like 99% of the anime dubbed) is the french version. It's so bad it's good, the actors are really talented and they're totally free to do what they want for Hnk. So in the end it's extremely funny
But the japanese version owns everything

shareSince the dubbed version was my first taste of Hokuto no Ken/ alias Fist of the North Star, it will always hold a place in my heart, but I can understand how those familiar with the Japanese voices would find the dub to be a turn off. The English director Carl Macek took some major liberties with the script, removing major references to the original manga, but for its time he made it accessible to the small niche of Western anime fans. He simplified the dub and produced some classic one-liners.
The casting for the dub was also near perfect, with stand out performances from Wally Burr (Raoh), Michael McConnohie (Shin), Dan Woren (Jagi) and Tony Oliver (Bat).

I usually prefer the original language tracks and if it is not on a DVD I might look for another release before I buy it. This does however not apply with the anime genre. Sure I would watch the gibli movies in Japanese but with oldschool action flicks like Ninja Scroll, Wicked City and Fist of the north star I prefer to go with the American language versions. It is cooler that way. I don´t know why, but it is.
P.S I watched the English language version of Suspiria, one of my all time favourite movies. The mood is a lot better in Italian and to be straight the English dub kind of ruined the movie for me.

having sed that have you ever noticed that most the time italian dubs allways seam to sinch up no matter what language thay are dubing
i saw dawn of the dead in italian one time it was verry well dubed in turms of lip sinch
but anyway japanse or chinise films or shows anime dubbed in to english imo sounds vile and especaly fist of the north star and what the hell did that do to the music that drum and bass stuff wasnt a score at all it just sounded like it was trying to be cool in the 90s it dosnt emote with what is going on on screen
