One of Mike's best

I've seen about 20 movies of Takashi M.

And this has to be one of his best films I've seen to date ,, the only flaw I saw was when they shot at that car (which had no damage) and was unrealistic the way he saw (forgot his name) sit in the car

The rest of the film was beautifully shot and very stylistic violence - when the main character slept with a prostitute for a whole evening and left his son outside in the rain with a puppy was beautifully done and heart wrenching

Great film 8/10

Rain of Honour

I defenately have to see this now. I am a fan of Japenese crime films, and Miike, so this is a must.

This really surpassed all of my expectations. It's a brilliant film and I'd recommend it to anyone, not just Miike fans. I wonder whether some Miike 'fans' would be dissapointed with this film because it lacks the excess of his more famous films. Either way, I'm very impressed by this film.

I didn't find it all that wonderful. It's dry as toast with no butter, despite the rain. The lack of any soundtrack apart from the rain might have worked in a more symbolism-laden piece, but her it just scorches the air.
It looks like it was shot on a tourist visa for lunch money.
Kes goes to Taipei.

Maybe it's a tribute to the early works of Kurosawa and Kitano, or the 60s French auteurs, but it didn't really stir any great emotion in me apart from impatience.
Jolly western of me, I know, but it could easily have lost half an hour without affecting what little storyline there was.
Compared to Shinjuku Triad Society, it's two steps back.

I also found the film to be very dry.

Although overall a very strong effort i cant help but feel that takeshi was going through the motions with this film as he had already covered the same themes in the first of the trilogy.

Compared to some of his other films (dead or alive especially) this film seems to wander aimlessly with no clear goal. Maybe he should have allowed the relationship between the yuji/son/prostitute develop more as this is where the films heart is at.

It's funny that people seem to think that this is one of Miike's best films when you factor in how little creative control he really had over it. It wasn't written by him and was at the mercy of a mostly Taiwanese production crew.
I can't see putting this relatively milquetoast movie up there with his better films.

On the interview with Miike on the Region 2 Tartan DVD, he states quite clearly that he was given the same level of creative freedom on this film as he had on any of his earlier works; as well as being able to make whatever changes he saw fit on the basis of each location. He also mentions that the producers told him that the finished project was a much more interesting film than the original script.

I personally thought that it was a very good and sombre film; reminding me of Eastwood's Unforgiven in terms of tone, as well as the obvious nods to Besson's Leon (The Professional). It certainly falls short of some of his more obvious personal works, but I think shows a lot more of his depth and range as a filmmaker.

I really loved the film.

Couldn't agree more, the only scenes that I liked in the movie were the father/hook son/dog scene and those at the beach house/beach.

Other than that it seemed pretty soleless, generic, slow and uninteresting.

Ive seen over 40 of Miike's movies and this one is in my top 3 for sure.
For some reason i just love this movie, great characters, awesome cinematography, great atmosphere, good story.
Loved it

This is the first film I've seen by Takashi Miike. So I don't want to judge him before I've watched at least a few more of his most renowned works.
Having said that "Rainy Dog" is IMO just an "Average" gangster flick.
I've seen tons better than this one.

If this is one of "his best" flicks, then I shouldn't expect too much from Mr. Miike and his films.

Anyway, I gotta watch a few more in order to confirm it or to discover that "Rainy Dog" is not actually one of his best works.

let's see.

cheers
