I posted this on the main dbz board as well, but i'm not getting any replies. i'm wondering if the funimation dvds are the only releases of the 13 dbz movies. I've been looking for imports at Asian sites like amazon.jp and yesasia, but haven't able to find any. Does that mean that even the Japanese are using the funimation releases? thx

The movies ARE being reissued in Japan in the Dragon Box sets, so there are, at the very least, those releases. However, these DO NOT contain english subtitles and are VERY expensive sets.
An Asian marketplace in my city had copies of nearly ALL of the DB/DBZ movies, which were Asian issues, however the poorly-translated English subtitles implied they were, most likely, Chinese bootlegs. Still, that seems to be the only way to get DB movie 1 uncensored for the time being.
To put it simply, I believe FUNimation DVD are the only releases IN MOST COUNTRIES, though in a country like Japan, there are enough other releases of the series like the Dragon Boxes that it's not necessary for FUNi to do business there.
