time line error

trunks couldn't have gotten his sword from tapion, goku transforms into ssj3 to beat the monster in the end. In the regular series goku doesnt turn ssj3 till atleast the cell saga or majin buu saga, in the future goku would have died due to the virus and never made it to ssj3.

The movies can be connected to the timeline (it's just not a good thing, cause there are some major plotholes). For example, the Garlic Jr. saga in DBZ is based entirely on DBZ Movie 1 (basically the series continues that story). There are even a lot of flashbacks from Movie 1 in that saga.

The first Cooler movie can no way fit into the main timeline thats for sure.

There are SOME things that can TECHNICALLY be canon to the Dragon Ball Z storyline. Why coudn't Movie 13 happen for real? So far, I've noticed that Movie 8, 12, and 13 could techincally happen.

Movie 8 - Broly: Could happen JUST before the Cell Games tournament. Gohan is a normal Super Saiyan, Trunks has long hair and no sword, etc etc. No reason it can't happen.

Movie 12 - Janemba: Would have happened just before Super Buu was formed. Gotenks has learned to fuse and is a Super Saiyan, Goku and Vegeta are both dead, and Goku can transform into a Super Saiyan 3, while knowing how to fuse, etc etc. Still no reason that can't happen either.

Movie 13 - Hirudegarn: Now this is a little tricky. Forget seeing the credits role and you see Future Trunks thrashing Frieza, cuz that's wrong. Now... Seeing as how Goku and company are all alive, this could all have happened in between the death of Kid Buu and the World Martial Arts Tournament (The End of Dragon Ball Z, with Uub and such). It would work since in Dragon Ball GT, Trunks has his sword, Goku still has Super Saiyan 3 ability, Gotenks has ascended to Super Saiyan 3, Gohan has achieved his Mystic Transformation, and Goku has the Ryuuken (Dragon Fist, which he uses in Dragon Ball GT).

Hope that helps! Take care!

oh and the First cooler movie does take place in the time line, and is the only movie to actually take place. It happens during the three years between friza's trip to earth and the andriods when they are training.

I disagree... Vegeta isn't a "Z Fighter" yet. His first appearance alongside the good guys was in Return of Cooler, movie 6. Would this have been canon, Vegeta would have surely appeared. Ever since Goku came back to earth, he was alongside the team at all times, am I right?

This movie can fit perfectly into the main timeline, taking place after the Kid Buu Saga. As such, since Tapion uses the time machine to go to the past (presumably to prevent the events that destroyed his people), he, like Future Trunks, created an alternate timeline, which is the one the movies take place in. Dragon Ball Super revealed that there are in fact 5 different timelines.
As for the sword question, it can be implied that this movie can fit in with it too. The androids possibly destroyed Hoi before he reunited the 2 halves of Hirudegarn, and then killed Tapion, who must have been freed from some other method aside from the Dragonballs, possibly by Bulma's technology (hoping that the "legendary hero" could defeat the androids). Thus, Future Trunks would have still gotten his sword from Tapion.
