Why the low score?

I thought this was an excellent movie, great plot, acting, and solid action scenes. Also, Yun-Fat's English was excellent in this movie, so he was actually given a good amount of dialogue, unlike in the Replacement Killers.

Anyway, I think this deserves at least a 7.0, if not higher, and same goes for Replacement Killers, which does not deserve as high a score as this movie, but still at least in the high 6s or low 7s.

its kind of a boring movie.
at least thats what I thought.

reply

If you think this is boring, then maybe you should stop watching soulless Hollywood productions like XXX, and start watching good movies.

This film has excellent performances, and actually takes a thoughtful approach towards action which seems so rare in American movies.

reply

i absolutely agree with you.
the performance of both, chow yun fat and wahlberg was absolutely stunning in every second of appearance. maybe movies like this receive a lower score than mainstream, because it is a fact, that people are overfed with the usual, exchangable saturday evening flicks and switching on the brain gets harder and harder from XXX-conversion #102 to XXX-conversion #103 to XXX-conversion #104.

(XXX and a man apart are in my personal "time i have wasted for nothing but sh*t"-scoreboard - also there are sh*tty works as "tears of the sun" and so on, i felt like slapping the person that is responsible for such a bs for insulting my nous. (movies like this aren't even entertaining with a full frontal lobotomy after different drugs of choice))

I have to agree that this is a very good movie. What makes it superior is Fat's very intense performance. You can clearly see his conflict when he considers turning on his partner.

I give this movie an 8. Not perfect, but above average.

I gave this film an '8'. It's got a great plot that twists and turns but not in a nausiating fashion; just enough to keep you on your toes.

The problem I think is the movie brought in only a certain kind of crowd. Not the people that like films like Glengarry Glenn Ross, but people who like films like xXx and A Man Apart. When all of a sudden there was an actual plot and character development, these people get board. They don't want meaningful drama. They want Vin Diesel (or Chow Yun Fat) kicking ass. The people who would like this type of film usually don't give it the time of day.

Why the low score? Mark Wahlberg's mutterings are harder to understand than Chow Yun-Fats Chinese-American accent - his acting is worse, there are too many instances of Wahlberg 'going it alone' in the crazy world of Chinatown - all 5'2 of him with a single handgun up against dozens of machine guns - in reality he'd be picked off in seconds, the plot is unnecessarily difficult to follow, which is probably tied in with the passive mentioning of Lee's, Wong's and Benny's as if we should just know who they are. Also, the Chinese Triads look about 13. And it isn't as entertaining as 'The Replacement Killers' - which admittedly isn't the greatest of films itself.

I remember back in 99' when it was released they advertised it as an action, which it really isn't at all. The action audiences were disappointed by the film. Also, the film really drags most of its running time and I think that hurt it as well. I don't have a problem with dialogue driven films but The Corruptor just feels like it didn't go anywhere most of the time. The plot was good but I think James Foley just wasn't the right person for the material. The Departed showed that cop movies can be dialogue driven and still be alot of fun. I'd lay blame on the advertising and a good director who chose material that wasn't right for him. I thought Yun-Fat was fine in his performance the movie just let him down. Walberg maybe just wasn't the right person to act opposite Yun-Fat, he was a complete bore in the part. The only time he came to life was when you discover his secret and even then the film chuggs to an unsatisfying finale on a boat. The director is what killed The Corruptor.

its funny you mention the departed. as i was watching this, theres definitely some similarities between the two, namely marky mark; ia investigating one of its own though the cop (who's dirty) doesn't know it; letting the triads know who the snitch/fed is which kills him/martin sheen character/scene.

ive only seen the movie once a looong time ago but have read the script twice and i wouldnt be surprised if william monahan in his adaptation for the departed borrowed some from this movie.

I really like this movie. Maybe I'm just a sucker for Chinatown action-thrillers, or Chow Yun-Fat, but I think it's a good film too. When I saw The Replacement Killers in the theater, I was disappointed. The Corruptor on the other hand, I felt very involved in, Chow had such a better character to work with. The style of the film I liked a lot. And you've got to admit Nick Chen is pretty damn cool.

Not Chan's best work, and not a scratch on God of Gamblers or Hard Boiled but still a very good film in it's own right and does deserve at least a 7!

reply

I just watched for the first time tonight and thought it was pretty good.
Yun-Fat was excellent.

7/10

Its a solid movie. The New York City scenery is always a plus. 7/10.

90% of the "New York" scenery was recreated in Toronto BTW

i totally agree..the concept is really good. an IA officer infiltrated to do a job of bringing down chow yun fat, but because of his father and his love for asian chicks, he gets sucked in, chow yun fat at first seems concerned with the fact that his share of the bribes has shrunk because of marky mark, but as their friendship develops, you realize chow does not want mark to go down that same road and become a puppet. you got a slick guy who gives tips to bring down his colleagues so that he can control everything and with each tip, his power grows cause the cops are more in his pocket. good movie.

reply

It wasnt great but I enjoyed it.

reply

It was nice, I enjoyed watching the development of the Chow's realization that Mark W was investigating him.
