I was a fan of Star Blazers (Space Cruiser Yamato) but Robotech came when I was trying (& failing) to leave kid stuff behind. But everyone raved about it, so I checked it out but was totally lost & thought I'd see it from the beginning some day. Then much later I find out Robotech is 3 different shows. So I decided to see the 3 shows as they originally appeared and not bother with Robotech.

I'm up to episode 10 of Macross and this seems to be the Minmay show with an occasional space battle. The city on the Macross is ridiculous, at least as it appears to have all the urban accoutrements after being improvised in 20 minutes after a disaster which should have wiped out 99% of everything on the island. So Minmay is a superficial bee-acth who is torturing poor Hikaru. The other characters seem unimportant and this 3rd level sub-plot is put front & center.

The show looks great & the action is good but the plot seems like a rehash of Yamato. An all powerful ship of alien design takes on an entire alien empire on it's own & wins. And I'm told Macross is the best of the 3 Robotech shows, guess I can put them on the lower half of my Netflix queue.

OK, this show improved big time once they got to the proto-culture part. Then Minmay's inclusion was intrinsic to the plot. But then it climaxes about ep 26 and we get 9 more eps to wrap up the love triangle more so than the war story.

It takes time. By ep. 10 or 11, things start to get cooking.
