the turtle

why did the yakuza guy kill that turtle with his sword so savagely? what was the point of it? it kinda gave me the impression that he wanted to do something bad with the village, but he infact wanted to protect it. how did you interpret it?

He doesn't want to leave, and he doesn't want anyone else to be able to get to the village. It's kind of like slashing the tyres on the bus, or sabotaging the railway line. Turtle power is the only way to cross the river. Bizarre, yes, but this is a fantasy,

Also think about that as a yakuza his way to deal with problems is through violence. That's what he has learned so he applied it here. His problem was that he didn't want to leave so he used violence to solve it.
