why do people hate this show so much?

why is it such a big deal that is has no "educational" value. i thought this show was for babies and toddlers. and the repetition is good for babies. the different sounds and colors are good for babies too. and about the speech issue, lots of speech pathologists actually do suggest speaking in simple subject verb sentences to help children start speaking. sure, babble isn't good for a baby. but "tubbies eat" "lala spill" "watch again" are good...plus repetition repetition repetition. i think this is a good show to watch in moderation with your baby because it is also a very good oppurtunity to teach your baby colors and sounds etc. i like teletubbies, guess i'm the only one here who does

No, you're not. It's a very good show for babies up through toddlers. I don't understand why adults are coming on here complaining and interpreting it by complicated adult standards. It's for little kids. Are some adults so self-involved that they can't let their little kids like what they like even if their parents don't like it? The parents who don't like the show could put up a little self-sacrifice and let their kids watch it for the short period of time that the child will be interested in it (which is probably only going to be for a couple years). By the time they are about four or five, they'll lose interest in this type of show. I've watched kids. I've tolerated many child oriented shows that I didn't like because the child did. I always found Barney way more irritating to watch than Teletubbies and put up with that show many times because the kids enjoyed it. To this day, I can't understand what kids like about Barney but it's not about the adult.

Because people who spend nearly everything waking hour watching reality shows and crime dramas except when they're at work watching videos on youtube or when they occassionally go out to movies and see a comedy full of fart jokes think TV should have educational value.

reply

I agree michael-ward-2. Why does it have to have educational value just because it's for toddlers? I used to love this show when I was 2 and 3. I watched it all the time, and I turned out okay, even if Teletubbies didn't really educate me.

I think that the idea of repeating and showing the "videos" on their stomachs twice is smart. Little kids always want to see things again.

reply

I hate it because the Teletubbies are ugly. I don't mind the rabbits, I don't mind the sun, I don't mind the funny little thing they live in... I don't even mind the vaccuum thing. But the Teletubbies I just cannot stand. I don't really like the Tweenies either, for the same reason. I much prefer children's shows like Pocoyo! :)

It's so dumb that it's not even for babies. Give'em Tom&Jerry over this any time...

The show was made for toddlers and if some adults don't get it ,maybe it just went over their heads
My kids loved it and their friends did to

reply

I hate it because my cousin, who is about 12 now, but when this show was popular she was a toddler, and she had a teletubby toy (forgot which character) that when you press it, it says and I quote *beep* *beep* as well as "bite my butt."

I don't think toy stuffed animals should teach kids to homophobic.

Also, it's just creepy. Boohbah is better.

Sure you have right show
I've check and none of the teletubbies say this
How old where you when this happened?

reply

Well it was recalled. Google teletubbies and the word f aggot and you will find out about it. That isn't really why I don't like the show though, I just think it sucks..even when I was a kid.

I have no idea but I'd say 8 or 9, maybe younger.

reply

Well, I didn't say it wasn't.

I just said..it said that.

My orignal reply was about your comment on teaching people to be homophobic
Malice by an ex-employee was how this phrase ended up in the toy and not the intent of the makers

FIRST off, as an ex teacher, children should NOT be watching shows that do not speak a real language!!! I CAN NOT believe people allow their children to watch this piece of "work"

Let's keep it nice.....

This show is strictly for Infants and Toddlers. Not for 5 year olds, not for 8 year olds, not for 10 year olds, not for 12 year olds, not for Teenagers or Young Adults, and certainly not for ex-Teachers! Do you understand this now? How is it that someone seemingly educated like yourself, would not fully understand this?

This show was designed around the findings of MODERN research and study into Child Development. In this case, it was about what the average infant and toddler have in their ability and comprehension of speech and language...Oh, what's the use of explaining it to you?

If you were capable of understanding the purposes of this show and its target audience, I wouldn't have to try and explain it to you, now would I?

I'll be generous and give you a "D-" this time.

If there is an Afterlife, it probably sounds like The Residents.

Adoobee doda icky labsoba I am an infant understanding their language..Icky bab roo roo sinkee doo...yeah!

Ok, maybe not so Ms Nice Gal

It's not so much about literally understanding it, it's how very young children react to it. They don't understand much language at all that early on. They do pick up on tone of voice, facial expressions and the like. Shows like Teletubbies work along these lines. It's just entertainment, it's not supposed to be educational like other shows.

Personally, the show does nothing for me - I'm far too old, I guess. I really don't know if I would have liked this show when I was 1-3 years old. I have my doubts but who can say? I taught myself to read & write English at 2.5-years old, by watching Sesame Street and The Electric Company and comparing words in my books. Obviously, something like the Teletubbies wouldn't have enabled this. Once again, the show is just feel-good entertainment for very young children. It's not meant to be very educational beyond the images/graphics that get printed on developmental baby toys and such.

If there is an Afterlife, it probably sounds like The Residents.

Well, aside from having no educational value, it's also annoying as hell and, in retrospect, highly disturbing concept for a kids show. Think about it. An orange skinned, blue eyed laughing baby who lives in the sun rises each morning, to mark the start of another cycle that is the teletubbie's monotonous existence. They tubbies have no other company besides the four of them, and their vaccum cleaner. Those weird voices that come from the speakers that pop up everywhere to tell them what to do and when, completely governing their lives. and they can be ANYWHERE. And they eat the same unappetizing pink gruel, day after day after day. And from the looks of it, the telletubbies never venture very far from home, do they? How do we REALLY know that they're happy? This sounds eerily like some twisted social experiment of some kind.

In a nutshell, Tubbieland is hell, if there ever was such a place.

I have been watching this show with my 16month old for the past 3 months or so.

And I am Amazed at how similar my toddler is to the teletubbies (not to mention the toddlers i used to look after at work)

She wants things done again and again (whether reading a book, or watching a full length movie, or doing a puzzle type game)

When she sees or hears another toddler/baby she is immediately interested in watching or listening or talking to them

She needs to be told what to do or what is coming next in her day.

She would love to eat the same thing every single day (specifically Banana's) if i would let her.

She loves her pets (which is what i would refer that Vacuumy thing to) and is often interested in where they are or what they are doing.

She sometimes gets nervous when going to an unfamiliar place and prefers to go to places she knows (particular parks, visit special friends, or just stay home)

She also speaks !Exactly! like them. nana = banana, fwower = flower or shower, up = up or down or finished, ta (speaks for itself), as well as personal family names. (she probably has more but cant think of it atm)

In terms of enjoying the show
She loves sun baby. watches the vids through both times. often dances with the characters. and especially likes tubby-bye-bye and plays boo with them everytime.

Anyhoo. thats my post/input/rant. enjoy

Because this show made the world even more stupid. In my baby/toddler years of television (1991 - 1997) I had shows you could watch with your parents and gain something valuable from them; Trap Door, Plasmo, Rocko's Modern Life, Ahhh Real Monsters, sheesh even Pokemon had a point to it but this show dumbed down babies so much, I mean sure they're babies but it didn't help their education and life learning skills; look at the show! Its monotonous, demeaning, meaningless and the teletubbies stumble around goo-goo-gahing and bu-bu-buhhing at everything like they have 0 brain cells. This show made the world more unintelligent than it already was, just think about the babies and toddlers from around 1997 - 2001 and think about how old they are now, they certainly aren't the most intelligent children are they just? Growing up on shows like this didn't help them.

Most of all, it was annoying. Have you seen Boohbah?! What a joke.
