WWII?

The baby in the face of the sun is a metaphor for God. THe fact that how no one pays attention to it shows the moral and ethical bankruptcy of the era at the time. The bright characters make a big show of getting food, which was rare in wartimes. Once could see how lovingly they cherished their custard. In one episode, we see a vacuum-like creature take all the food.

This vacuum-creature is representative of the government, who would ration everything out but keep the brunt for themselves. Also, the vacuum-creature had a moustache that looked a little like Hitler's. Or Mussolini's. The Teletubbies are intent on showing their TV-tummies, perhaps to educate the younger generations on the perils of wartime since schools were reduced to rubble and parents wanted to pass on their knowledge in case they died suddenly.

It could still symbolize it, Soadlover1.

And kids will pick up on it later in life and make the connection, obviously.
