The bright characters make a big show of getting food, which was rare in wartimes. Once could see how lovingly they cherished their custard. In one episode, we see a vacuum-like creature take all the food.
This vacuum-creature is representative of the government, who would ration everything out but keep the brunt for themselves. Also, the vacuum-creature had a moustache that looked a little like Hitler's. Or Mussolini's.
