Kids who watch may develop speech issues

I swear, the little children who grow up watching this show are going to have speech problems. The Teletubbies talk like idiots and kids are like little sponges that mimic everything.

"I grew up watching this show. A lot. I speak fine. In fact, I am in the higher level of english in school."

Someone needs to tell your English teacher that "A lot" is not a sentence.

... Actually it's called a 'minor sentence'... It's usage in formal written English is not appropriate to be sure, but for simple message-board banter it will do just fine...

zero,
You shouldn't be pointing out people's sentence structure with that mangled nonsense you tried passing off as opinion.

I completely agree! My friend's son's favorite tv show was the teletubbies. He watched it constantly and had tons of videos. Half the time I can't understand a thing he says to me. He's actually in special speech classes at school and the teacher said most of the children in her class watched that show! She said that when kids are first learning to speak they learn what they hear like monkey see monkey do. Makes sense!

Strange, my boy is 4 and has a better level of pronunciation than many adults I know let alone other children his age, he even corrects people of they don't speak properly and he grew up obsessed with the Teletubbies.

Saying that, we've always rationed TV to certain times of the day and had 'no telly' days. It does make me wonder how much time children with problems are allowed to spend in front of the idiot box for it to have a bigger influence than a parent.

Lol, I got it. This show is some kind of evolution tool. It makes or breaks children. The strongest survive, etc :)

Lol yes! It totally gives children speech impediments. My friend once asked his little sister a question and she looked at him and said "Po!".

I grew up watching this show, and now I'm top in my year (an all-rounder) in one of Britain's highest-achieving grammars.
Please don't generalise, thank you.

reply

It's not a problem so long as parents talk to their kids and don't use the TV as a substitute childminder...

A show doesn't affect how a child grows up, it's just the child and the parents.

Your mother better do a little bit more research. It's been proven that any television is bad for kids who watch it. Babies up to age two are advised not to watch ANY television and those over are advised only to watch up to two hours of EDUCATIONAL (not cartoons, etc.) per day.

Rubbish. I watched Nick Jr., Cartoon Network, Disney, and Nickelodeon at the age of two, along with kid movies and videos, and I'm quite alright.

Speech issues come about dispite if the child watches Teletubbies or not. I was born years before Teletubbies and I have always had Speech issues. My little cousin who grew up watching Teletubbies did have a bit of Speech problem but he also has a lot of problems with his ears it's a wonder he hears anything at all.

Teletubbies talk the way they do cause the show is targeted to infants and small children. My Nephew loves it.

my brother watched it all thetime when hewas younger andhe has never had speech problems.

My mom said I always used to watch this, but my speech is fine. Then again, when Mom found out the guy in the Barney suit was arrested, she forbid me to watch it.

my daughter watched the teletubbies all the time when she was a baby and it's not affected her speech in the slightest, she's 8 this year and has an extensive vocabulary in 2 languages. If your child is having difficulty with their speech then take them to a specialist, don't blame it on a tv program...

I'm 29, and I think it affected MY speech more than my son's! (Well, after my boy doing the usual thing and playing it back-to-back for the better part of the day, its a small wonder if I went a bit wibble, eh?)

Thats true about watching and having speech issues because I had a friend (he moved) who watched teletubbies and I could barely understand his words.

see, im 13, and I watch the teletubies just because I think they're really cute!!!

I'm studying this program as part of a 'children's culture' unit at university, and I believe that as long as a child is in an environment where all the grown-ups around them speak well and don't address them with baby talk, they will be perfectly capable of speaking well. Their speech development will not be undermined if the PEOPLE in their environment speak to them properly and do not encourage jibberish and baby talk with, for example: "Oh, you sho cute, you shnookums bubby, yesh you are..."

As for this:

my niece watchs this and i dont think she should because i think thats why she doesnt talk right

You don't SPEAK CORRECTLY (ie: not 'talk right') either. Perhaps that's why your niece is struggling with her speech?

just to elaborate for those people who need it

A child/baby could only get speech impairment from this show if it was the only thing in their environment that had speaking.
If it was the only show they watched, non-stop; and their family members did not talk to them; and they didnt go anywhere where there were people talking... you get my drift.

You can't prove that it was specifically this show that caused the impairment because of the many factors accosiated with speech development.
Maybe circumstancial but definatly not on majority vote or beyond reasonable doubt.

My rant is over. Back to the show.

Teletubbies talk like BABIES. Since this show was made for BABIES. If a child has speech problems it's probably not from television but from other reasons.

Are some adults THAT stupid that children spell better than them?!

I don't let my son watches Teletubbies all the time.
He watches other kids programs as well.
I even limit his television viewing hours.

I grew up watching this and I don't have a speech impediment. So you might know one kid who has a speech impediment and just happened to watch this show, so what? Teletubbies will not cause your kids to get one. Geez, people are so overreactive these days! You think this show is so bad, watch Boobah sometime. Now that show will cause your kid to go braindead.

reply

Speech and language impairments are neurological u don't get them from a TV program.
