The Weirding Way in this

Was that the Mortal Kombat motion moves or something ? I didn't understand the knife fighters running up to guys with multibarrel guns and not being blown to pieces.

Trust no one.

Yes, the weirding way in this version, and from the books, was the Bene Gesserit martial art form. It was an art that taught how to put the full force of one's body behind an attack, to hit with speed and power, and to attack an enemy's weak points and nervous system to incapacitate and kill them.

In the books the fremen didn't do suicidal frontal assaults with knives against guys with guns.

Call me crazy but I like the David Lynch version more.

Cinematically it was more powerful, which one presumes is why he did it.

But it was a travesty of what Herbert describes in the books, something that was fascinating but probably couldn't be made to have the necessary impact on screen.

Also "weirding way" was a Fremen term for a skill they saw as close to supernatural. Hearing it used by the Atreides before they met the Fremen was really jarring to me, in both but much more so in the Lynch film.

This is Jessica speaking to Paul:

“You know your mind and bindu-nervature perhaps better than I do, but you’ve much yet to learn about your body’s prana-musculature. The body does things of itself sometimes, Paul, and I can teach you about this. You must learn to control every muscle, every fiber of your body. You need review of the hands. We’ll start with finger muscles, palm tendons, and tip sensitivity.”
