Rumors of a new 'Dune' movie

Dune Film Rumor Emerges

C.H.U.D. reported a rumor that a new movie version of Frank Herbert's classic SF novel Dune may be in the works. The site cites Byron Merritt, who runs the official Dune novel forums and is a member of the Herbert family.

"We're getting VERY close to a deal. Heard that news today," Merritt reportedly posted on Aug. 24. "Although only rumor, I've heard that 'someone' at the studio wants Dune reallllly bad and has been a fan of the novel for years. They're not saying who this is (and it might just be hype), but I'm holding out hope that whoever this might be is a big enough fan that he/she will do the book justice. Supposedly it's some director."

Dune was previously adapted as a movie by director David Lynch and again as a miniseries on SCI FI Channel.

I would rather see a sequel series made of God Emperor of Dune... I don't think the books is ever gonna work in the shape of a movie... unless it is as long as the a mini-series.

reply

I dissagree with you.

I think the movies would be great.

And the miniseries weren't that amazing.

I would love to see a Dune Trilogy in the cinema's.
It would be just as great as the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy.

reply

Agreed.

Peter Jackson, you reading this?

Peter Berg, hmm... interesting.

I would say so.

But then again, Peter Jackson wasn't my first choice to tap the Lord of the Rings.

There's a lot at stake when attempting something like this, but I hope he'll be the one who finally gets it right.

I without a doubt agree(I'm looking at you, Dino)

I would say they need to break this into two or three films just to get this thing right.

They pulled a trailer recently of a proposed 8-hour fan film on youtube.Looked like the investors to me.Personally I'd rather just read the book.

It's already been done right - By David Lynch !!!!

If they want to TRY to do it again, ok, but please don't use Tim
("I f@#cked up the Planet of the Apes") Burton!! Peter Jackson
would be cool!

reply

vorlonhomeworld I regret to inform you that David Lynch tried to get his name taken off the movie he hated it so much.

reply

because of what the studio did to his movie.

reply

Yo dookie,

He removed his name from the LONG version - not the regular version.
Nice try

I love the book but I don't think the world needs another Dune adaptation. Maybe if they picked another book in the series like God Emperor or some Dune pre-history like the Butlerian Jihad.

Thje mini-series kinda felt uninspiring at times but they were really loyal to the novels but the 1984 film's art design felt more like Dune. Either way I enjoy Both the Movie and the Mini-Series. I hope this new one would be good.

reply

If they are making another Dune movie, then here is who I think should play the characters.

Paul Atreides-Zac Efron or Elijah Wood or someone who looks like Kyle MacLachlan when he played Paul in the classic 1984 version of Dune

Jessica-Kelly Preston

Duke Leto Atreides-Viggo Mortinsen

Duncan Idaho-Paul Walker

Gurney Halleck-Patrick Stewart (personally I can't see anyone else playing Gurney other than Patrick Stewart)

Feyd Rautha-Timothy Olymphant (I thought he would make a good Feyd because he looks like Feyd and his performance as Agent 47 was awesome)

Rabban-Ethan Suplee

The Baron-Someone who looks like Kenneth McMillan or at least someone who can play the Baron like Kenneth McMillan did. Personally, I did not like the way the Baron was portrayed in the 2000 minieries. He was too gay in the miniseries. So, they should make him act like the way he did in the classics.

Dr. Yueh-Dylan Walsh or Robert Patrick

Reverend Mother Mohiam-Judi Dench or someone who can play the part.

Piter-Robert Patrick

Thufir-Ian McKellen

Stilgar-Julian McMahon

Chani-Megan Fox or Eva Green

Dr. Kynes-Alfred Molina or someone who can play the part

Irulan-Bryce Dallas Howard or someone who looks the part and can play the part.

Emperor Shaddam IV-Richard Roxburgh

Well, I hope that the movie is a combination of the classic and new Dune movies. But I would definitely like to see the new Dune movie whenever it comes out.

Yeps, there's an entry here on IMDB stating Dune 2010. Might be true after all.

reply

I do believe it's going to happen, and pretty much the writer's strike is the only thing blocking it. Here's hoping they actually get a deal sooner now that they're back at the table.

And a Kill Bill/Matrix style marketing ain't a bad move. It would actually get more people to understand the story a lot better than the previous attempts.

reply

I hope it doesn't just turn into some awesome action movie though (not that i like those too). The original books were written with incredible genius and an insane understanding of politics, economics, and humanity in general. Making Dune movies and miniseries (which are all very well done and i thoroughly enjoy) is in all honesty and insult to the mind of Frank Herbert who's purpose was far beyond just entertainment, and the underlying messages and analytical aspects he writes simply wouldn't appeal to or even be understood by (most) audiences. If new Dune movies were to be made, i think they should be done with the Brian Herbert prequels which serve more of that entertainment basis that would make a great movie.

reply

I disagree-I don't think that Dune movies/miniseries are an insult to Frank Herbert or the novels, rather they are a tribute to them. The movie and the mini-series, while not perfect, were each in their own way faithful to the spirit of Herbert's work(the miniseries more so perhaps). If, however, a new popcornish Dune were made that was all special effects and no story, that might be an insult to Herbert's memory.

reply

I agree with that. I didn't put my opinions in a very good way. They were excellently done and a great tribute. I just hope a new one doesn't turn into what many book made movies are these days, a mindless piece of action.

they oughta fire berg and hire alejandro jodorowsky hes already got all the preproduction done. well need to reanimate salvador dali though

RIP Akira Ifukube (1914-2006)

reply

I want Jodorowsky's Dune to be made, I definitely do, but I don't think that one would be even remotely close to the source material though.

reply

I would like if Jodorowsky just made the film (as an animation) and call it something else.

He took many of those ideas and put them in the graphic novel Metabarons.

reply

That could be cool

You think up a witty signature.
