Battleship, cruiser and a destroyer?

reply

If only they'd invent something like Google where you could type that in and get an answer for yourself instead of being a lazy-azz.

If only they'd invent some way to keep people with low self esteem from bolstering their egos by posting insulting non-answers What a waste of time on just's part and everyone who read it. If we all followed just's logic there would be no questions on imdb boards, after all we should Google it instead of being lazy-azzes. Just if you don't want to answer a question, or perhaps don't know the answer, just ignore it. Save yourself some time and the public humiliation from demonstrating that you have nothing useful, no constructive opinion, and no knowledge or information to contribute.

Look, sh!t stain. He didn't ask an opinion. He didn't ask something obscure which might not be able to be found easily. He asked a very simple question which he could have found out himself. He had to open an internet browser in the first place just to get to this site. It isn't any more difficult to enter the question into the search engine to get his answer.

Would it be any better if he asked the question and someone gave him an answer that was wrong?

Don't encourage the lazy-azzes. They just grow up to be lazy-azzes who leech off of society instead of taking care of themselves.

I seem to recall you getting after someone else for a non-answer.

At least this OP gave a coherent question even if easily goggled.

The one you chastised me for was not an easily googled question, but was contradictorily incoherent.

Don't pull the same thing you get after others for.

Nice try, but fail. I gave cr*p to a moron who asked about Adm. Halsey. What this person asked isn't a straight up question / answer, as witnessed by your response.

You are confusing/conflating two separate things.

Do you want to know what the safe distance from a torpedo explosion is?
Or do you want to know how far the torpedo has to travel before it can explode?

Because those are not the same thing.

You ask one thing, then describe the situation that has nothing to do with what you ask and is about the other.

Maybe you want to rethink what it is you are asking about and I'll do my best to answer you once you figure out what you are asking.

There you go with the name calling again, you must be very intelligent to be able to come up with them and to use profanity too! That proves that your opinion is truly the only one we should pay any attention to. I did not know imdb boards were restricted to only questions about opinions, you must know somebody important and have inside information hidden from the rest of us. But your reasoning and logic are both circular and self contradictory, the next time I need to know some obscure information I'll ask it on some public forum, rather than search for an authoritative source. And, as we all know Google lists only reliable, authoritative sources.
Relax, this is a forum about movies and related questions, perhaps about a film or "inspired" by it. If a question gets you so steamed up that you have to name call and blame the questioner for society's ills perhaps you should avoid the boards entirely. In fact, again by your reasoning, why would anyone ask for an opinion? How is one to know that any answer comes from someone with enough knowledge, experience, or common sense to have an opinion with any real value at all?

An extremely simplistic answer concerning WWII, is size with battleship the largest with largest longest range guns and heaviest armor. Cruiser can be of similar over all size, same size guns but less armor=less weight it is faster and has longer cruising range than battleship, is more vulnerable to a hit, relies on speed and maneuverability for defense.
Destroyers, originally Torpedo Boat Destroyers, are fast and maneuverable intended as escort vessels especially against even smaller faster torpedo boats. Lightly armored and lightly gunned they rely on speed and maneuverability for offense and defense. By WWI and especially WWII their speed and maneuverability lent them to a variety of modifications and adaptions and purposes, especially in anti-aircraft and anti-submarine roles.

Are you talking currently or traditionally?

Currently there are no Battleships.
The last battleshios in the world were the 4 Modernized WW2 Battleships of the Iowa Class
USS Iowa
USS New Jersey
USS Missouri
USS Wisconsin

All were permanently decommissioned in the early 90's.

Most Modern warships are fairly multi-mission capable. There is not much difference in ferms of firepower or mission capability beteeen a modern Cruiser and Destroyer. A Cruiser is going to be somewhat larger and carry more total weapons, have more bunkerage and greater range without refueling, but not much difference. Take a look at the Arleigh Burke Destroyer vs the Ticonderoga Cruiser by way of example.

Most modern Navies don't even have Cruisers. Only the US Navy and Russian Navy have true Cruisers. The Destroyer or Frigate is generally the largest most capable ship in most other navies.

Traditionally the was a much greater gap between ship types.

The Battleship was the largest, most armored warship there was, with the largest most powerful weapons.

It was capable of wiping the ocean clean of all other ships but other Battleships.

A slugfest between Battleships was truly a sight to behold. No other ships stood a chance.

During the Battle of Samar, the largest most powerful Battleship in History found itself and fellow warships facing off against the American ships of task force Taffy 3. The Yamato weighed as much in tonnage as all 13 US ships combined, including the 6 carriers. Just one Turret of her 18 inch guns weighed as much as an entire Fletcher class Destroyer.

A Cruiser on the other hand Had nearly the same weapons and guns as a Battleship, was nearly the same size or only slightly smaller. but were more lightly armored and much faster than the slow battleships. a trade-off between speed and agility vs Armor and hitting power.

Destroyers were much smaller vessels. lightly to no armor at all. and were primarily used for scouting and screening a larger force and for anti-submarine duties.

Just by looking at them, unless you knew your ships specifically, one would be hard pressed to tell the difference between Battleships and cruisers. Both were massive ships with huge mostrous guns in massive turrets.

Destroyers are easily told apart from them being much much smaller and only lightly armed and armored.

Nicely expanded, sailor, I thought about adding some of that info, but with my one finger typing it would have taken hours. So thanks for jumping in there.

We coulda talked about how the speed of the cruiser HMS Hood permitted it to catch the Nazi battleship Bismark, but the heavier armored Bismark sank the more lightly armored Hood. And how the end of the Bismark could be an allegory for the end of battleships in general, being sunk by submarine and aircraft carrier actions. We could debate whether the Hood was a heavy cruiser, a battle cruiser, or a fast battleship, best ignore the two "Princes" involved in the incident, and a lot of other details and differences between types of ships then and now, it would take pages. And that's probably more than OP Alex really wants to know and would just upset ruler of the imdb boards and exalted high hypocrite, justnicknamed, and we don't wanta do that.

I will just add that, as you said, the modern destroyer has taken on the roles of most older war ships. The destroyer is larger, faster, and better armored than in WWII and with nuclear powered engines and missles generally has a longer cruising range, and longer range and heavier fire power than typical WWII battleships and cruisers.
Frigate, huh? You had to bring up frigate. So what's the difference between a frig....aw, friggit, neva mind.

Re. your sig line. In "Duck Soup" Harpo Marx holds up a sign. " Join the Navy and see the world. Join the Army and see the Navy."

Ummm... No.
First off, lets start with the obvious. Nuclear powered engines? ROFLMAO!!!

Where in the hell did you cone up with that bit of ignorance? Reading too much of that stupid novel that a bad TV series is based off of?

AKA: The Last Ship.

We DID HAVE some Nuclear powered cruisers, but they all went away the same time the last Battleships did. Re: the mid 90's.

While there is some light armor over certain crtical spaces and systems, for the most part, Modern Destroyers are still unarmored just as their WW2 counterparts were, much less your suggestion that they are more so that battleships.

And so too is their firepower. They are not more powerful, it's just the nature of that power has changed.
Unless you are counting nuclear armed tomahawks (of which none of ours currently have but could be refitted) the typical missile is not more powerful that a 16" AP or HE shell from a Battleship's main battery.

Wait, I thought I was the exaulted high ruler and hypocrite of the IMDb boards.

At least that's what I get accused of constantly by idiots, trolls, and others who cant use common sense and critical thinking ro save their lives.

I have quite the reputation for slamming people who post bs without thinking, or who post utter stupidity.

And actually... Justanicknamed and I see eye to eye on a lot of things when it comes to other posters (at least from my perspective. Not answering for him.)

To include a relatively low opinion of AlexRM7. The boy has on more than one ocassion (look up a thread about First Strike Weapons on the Red October board for example) has opened mouth and inserted his foot. Alex has on several ocassions asked questions, then questioned the veracity of those that took the time to give factual answers.

My only contention with Justanicknamed is rhat he recently chastised me for giving a "nonanswer" just as he did here.
More of a chuckle, not an argument.

Your outright attack of him for a nonanswer is more in line with the second response I got in my nonanswer thread from one of my resident Sailor-Hater fanclub founding members.
An idiot that loves to attack my postings and pour hate on me no matter what I post or do.

This is exactly the reason I posted it here. I would have to scroll the shi*out of google and visit 15 websites to find the answer as good as this. There is an answer on wiki but not even close as thorough as this one. Thanks man.

reply

I got no problem answering your questions, Alex.

Just make sure you listen to the answers. You have on several ocassions tried to gainsay the response you got from knowledgeable members when you admittedly didnt know WTF you were talking about.
Or to twist other's answers about with your own ignorance of opinion.

I will hand it to you though. And I have mentioned it before as well on another thread... You do take it in stride when you do get slapped down for it. Rather than going on a ranting hate filled posting spree as so many others tend to do.
