Tony Soprano Watches the John Wayne Western "Rio Bravo" on TV

In one episode, they showed Tony Soprano watching the John Wayne Western "Rio Bravo" (1959) on TV at home. That movie is about frontier lawman John Wayne and his deputies against a local land boss and his henchmen.

I've always wondered:

Did Tony identify with John Wayne(a COP?) or with the bad guys and their boss?(a gang and a gang boss.) Must have been hard for his brain to twist into identification with "the good guys" when he himself in real life is a "bad guy" -- a boss leading a gang.
