Why is Meadow such a brat?
And why do Tony and Carm NEVER put her in her place? Carmela often apologized to Meadow when she was criticizing her.

shareMy friend and his wife have two kids and I've seen this dynamic play out before my eyes. Their youngest was similar to Meadow, she was a bright student and right around 15 she developed a sharp tongue. I actually had a talking to her a couple of times and I could tell the parents were actually glad someone spoke up. It was easy to see she was influenced by her friends and basically bringing home their attitudes. Her best friend was from a good family and she really had emotional issues, outbursts, crying, yelling, the parents were on top of this issue so in the long run I hope she should be fine. Yes, they were brats but I did notice a good change in the first girl I mentioned. Deep down I couldn't stand her but I was friends with the family and glad to see her behave better. The 2nd girl I mentioned I wouldn't even acknowledge as she had embarrassed me in public. I would talk to her dad but not her mom as the situation was hopeless. Made for a couple of very uncomfortable moments when I ran into them, it was so frustrating I gave the stink eye to mom and daughter and they looked away. I'm glad I'm not a parent but I will say if my son or daughter embarrassed my friend in public I would severely punish them right then and there where they would NEVER do it again.
As far as Meadow not being put in her place. Yes, the parents were doing HER a DISSERVICE by not taking action. Relationships tend to be extremely difficult if you flap your gums so loud all the time. I do remember one time Tony yelling at Carmela that "we can't let her know we're powerless!" I think this is how a lot of parents feel, that they are powerless. When in reality, if you just GO OFF on your kids when they misbehave and back up your threats and promises if they don't get in line then you can have a lot of success. Also, I've been around families in Central and South America. God, the kids are so well behaved it's super sweet and you get to see how horrible and selfish American culture truly is.

shareI'm rewatching it right now and am almost done with Season 2. She's the absolute worst. I can't believe what she was getting away with. Nothing worse than a condescending 16-year old princess who thinks she's smarter than anyone else in the room.

I guess that was the point - he was lazy and unmotivated. It could have been due to being in the shadow of the great Tony Soprano or more that Tony was always shooting him down and insulting him. Pile on his sister was the obvious favorite and you got this aloof moron for a son.
Actually, I actually thought the actor did a great job with the material.
A.J. is what Tony would have been like if he had been spoiled and indulged growing up the way A.J was
