Would Tony Soprano be a Trump supporter?

The question over whether James Gandolfini's character would be a "Make America Great Again" guy has consumed Sopranos fandom. The Sopranos creator David Chase addressed the question in a New York Times interview published last month, saying that Tony Soprano would think the president is "full of sh*t" and "penny-ante." Yet many Sopranos fans point out that Tony's characteristics would make him be the perfect Trump supporter. Yet others argue that Tony would be too overly familiar with Trump's way of doing business to support him.

David Chase is a libtard. Those are HIS thoughts on Trump. He should let the character and actor rest because he is not here to answer for himself.

It was pretty clear throughout the show that Tony was Republican, or at least conservative. He might not have liked Trump as a person, but he definitely would not have been voting for Hilary.

Remember in his first session with Melfi, he talks about feeling like he just missed the best of times for the country and that everything was slowly going down hill. Melfi agreed that a lot of people from Tony's generation felt that way. This is exactly the people that MAGA is aiming to appeal too. And its not like Tony would look down upon someone for shady business deals, or for womanizing while married.

Trying to put aside partisan politics & understand Chase's point. Why can't Tony think Trump's "full of sh*t" and still support him? He probably had the same opinion of Bill Clinton.

reply

Not like Tony was a particularly thoughtful person. I can see Chase writing him as a far-right dumb-ass.

Remember is season 5 when Tony hears on the news that it "could be possible" for a terrorist to hid in a cargo crate and ship himself to America. However at the Bing he reports that it "did happen" and becomes irate when the other guys aren't as paranoid about it as him, and even beats Georgie for it. This is the kind of fear and paranoia that Trump is counting on when he talks about the necessity of building the wall.

Being in Jersey and having many friends in New York, its possible Tony knows guys who have done business with Trump. So he might know for fact that Trump has been associated with questionable characters, and maybe has done some shady business. But Tony would probably just look at Trump just being a ruthless business man, who will stop at nothing to get things done.

reply

He totally would, of course.

Carmela:"I voted for him (Bush)."

Tony: "Dick Cheney for President - of the fuckin universe."

Most people vote for self interest. I think that's what Tony and Carmela did.

Tony was a MAN! There should be NO QUESTION that Tony would've voted for Mr. Trump! Carmela would've voted for Donald as well. The 4 Sopranos (Tony, Carmela, AJ and Meadow) were kind of like The Keatons from Family Ties in reverse. Instead of the parents being ultra-liberal, the Soprano parents are old school Italians (ie no sex talk at the breakfast table, stay with your own kind, everything is about being Italian....No Mericans (Cusamano) etc....). Whereas the kids SCREAM ultra-liberal Millenial ideals.
