the most annoying character?

To me, it comes down to Carmela, Adriana or A.J.

reply

A.J. had his moments. I got super annoyed with Meadow in several episodes. Janice was crazy, she worked my last nerve plenty of times.

reply

Carmela...Not so annoying as being outright detestable throughout the final season - although there were earlier detestable moments: her jealousy over Meadow's freedom and using underhanded tactics to stop her from studying in "free and liberal" California.

In the final season, Carmela has little left to do other than being a Stepford Mob Wife.
Her detestable moments include her childish sour-puss expression when she doesn't get her way; her jealousy over Angie's car and career success; her blaming Tony's depression for AJ's suicide attempt; her further revealing Vito's homosexuality due to her need to gossip; her belief that Vito may have AIDS just because he's gay; her racist "concern" for AJ dating a Puetro Rican, and her approval of Meadow following in her footsteps of enabling housewife.

Like most other characters in the end, such as Tony, Carmella regressed and failed to make positive changes.

reply

All of them were pretty annoying by the last season.

reply

Detestable is a great word for Carmela. About the only time I recall her seeming happy or joyous, or loving, is when she got something material. The more expensive the item, the more loving should would be. And she was a selfish b.... too. Like when she showed up to take Jenny Sack for a "surprise" spa date, just so she could show off her new Posche - while John S. was in the cane and Jenny was being hounded by creditors. Carmela was as despicable as any character on the show.

reply

Totally agree. Like other characters she seemed to grow worse towards the end.
She became worse after reconciling with Tony; reversing all the previous progress she had made, and seemingly becoming more judgemental, materialistic, and insecure.

She had tried to get away from Tony, but being looked upon as a gangster's wife, and lawyers refusing to take her divorce case, defeated her. She resigned herself to Tony for her financial well-being and property investment.

reply

Cant remember most of them.

I just ran through a list quick.

I'm going to go with Melfi's shrink. He was annoying.

reply

Janice, obviously.

reply

Holy cow! I can't believe I left Janice off the list. She was insufferable.

reply

#1Janice. But AJ could get on my nerves.

reply

I'll agree with you on Janice. Kind of a bold move (in a way) to ask an actress who isn't very attractive in any way, to actually play a really unlikable person. But unlike how I see people feeling about Carm, (who I totally bought into as her character), the Janice character just seemed to grate and I would have preferred not to have experienced at all.

But that guy who punched and ended up killing the sweet chick with the braces, he was way more than annoying -- he was evil. Don't remember how he got his end, but he sure deserved it.
I wonder whatever became of that actress? While she did some things that don't make her all that sympathetic, she seemed to be a sweetie who just didn't know any better not to get involved with these type of people. Easy money, I guess.

reply

Ralph Ciferetto you're referring to. Yes he was vile and more psychopathic than the others but in contrast, I found his character facinating, funny, and tense to watch. He was a entertaining antagonist for Tony.

I'm suprised you say you don't remember what happened to Ralph considering the lead up to his fate, and his fate itself, was one of the shocking highlights of the series.

reply

Oh and Ralph's victim was the 20 year single mother stripper Tracee, who may have been pregnant with his child. She was a tremendously sympathetic as well as being a flawed character, and her brutal death haunted me for days after. The actress who played her as being quiet since.

Didn't feel any empathy after his son was shot with an arrow and his subsequent break down? That was phenomenal acting by Joe Pantoliano by the way.

reply

[deleted]

That was the same episode as his demise rendering it more shocking.
Yeah he seems to play those sort of roles a lot. From what I recall though he did play good guy cops in the Bad Boys films and in the Fugitive and US Marshals. He also played the good cop lead in a brief series of which I can't remember the name.

The fourth season episode has Ralph's son being shot with an arrow during a backyard reenactment of Lord of the Rings and falling into a coma. Ralph grieves and attempts to improve himself as a father and person. Tony is there for him. But later Tony suspects Ralph of setting fire to the stables and killing his horse. Ralph vehemently denies the charge and it seems he's finally telling the truth. A fight breaks out anyhow ending with Ralph being choked to death and his head bashed aganist the floor. Tony and a drugged out Christopher mutilate his coprse and dispose of it.

Ralph is essentially killed over a horse he did not kill with a subtle reminder of Tracee.

reply

It adds up!

reply

I had the impression that Ralph did set the fire.

reply

I remember hearing, perhaps in the audio commentary, that Joe Pantoilano was instructed to play the part as if he didn't set the fire...

reply

Interesting. I guess if it wasn't the horse, something else would have eventually triggered a showdown. There was certainly enough bad blood between the two of them.

reply

Probably yeah I agree. Although I think Ralph would have been a worthy ally during the New York feuds - only because Johnny Sac hated him otherwise he probably would have swicthed sides due to a loss in profit.

reply

Yep, that's his name. I could have looked it up somehow but your post did it for me. Thanks !

reply

Yes, I remember her well. Very pretty and cheerful, but the situation her character found herself in was simply awful. Hard to believe anyone with anything going on for them would choose such a path. I guess that's creative license.

reply

Personally I found it easy to see. A poor Jersey girl with an abusive mother who held her ear to the stove, with no education and no support, finding herself using her body at the Bada Bing and being "looked after" by mobsters.

reply

Yeah, the odds were definitely against her in a big way.

reply

I really enjoyed the Sopranos, but only binge-watched it once. I guess if I saw his demise again, I'd suddenly remember. Been a while. I kinda remember how Steve Buscemi bought it, and definitely Adrianna. Plus the fat guy on the boat. Now that's a great way to get rid of a body. If they can get the person off the boat before capping them, life (and death) would be so easy.

reply

The guy is a good actor. I can't think of his name off the top of my head, but he was also in The Matrix, and he plays "psycho" really good. I watched Sopranos in a very compressed fashion and by myself, so I never re-watched anything. I rented the DVDs from Blockbuster.

"I wonder what ever became of the actress?"

Well, according to her (Ariel Kiley):

Ralph ..., that voice!!!
I was dancing when Tony killers him

reply

Christopher. Second choice would be Pauly. Especially when he was with Christopher. It is obvious they were written to be ignorant and unappealing yet they are being held up as such heroes in this story. Says way too much about todays society.

reply

Meadow hands down.
