How did Carmine not know Paulie?

I understand it shows how Paulie found out Johnny Sack was using him. But I believe I have seen them at the same gatherings throughout the show, I could be wrong though. But even if I am wrong, they are both old timers. Paulie goes back to when Johnny Boy Soprano was boss. I'm not saying that they should have been close, but they at least should have known each other.

If you knew Paulie, would you admit it?

when is it stated they dont?

@bigbadwolf666 I think it was in the later part of season 4. There is a wedding scene and at the reception Paulie sees Carmine and goes over to talk to him. Carmine does not know who Paulie is. It is clear at that moment that Johnny Sack was just using Paulie....probably to get inside information about what was going on in Tony's "family'.

That is a good question. Despite having both attended Christopher's getting made party in the third season, I always just assumed that Carmine was becoming old and forgetful and didn't place much importance in Soprano crew members. He did say on the golf course in that very episode that the Soprano Family is simply "a glorified crew".

Correct. Phil Leotardo repeated that comment in the final season.

Carmine probably had wiseguys from all the families constantly introducing themselves to him. He was older and his memory probably wasn't as sharp as it used to be, but even if it was he probably didn't bother to remember all of them. Especially ones from families that he held in lower regard, like the Sopranos. The only person from that family he probably even bothered to remember was Tony, and maybe Sil.
