I had forgotten how funny it is

Just finished rewatching the series for the first time in nearly a decade and I had forgotten how funny the show is. While obviously it's a very serious show with serious content, the humor is outstanding. I think I laughed out loud at least once every episode.....Paulie, Sil, Tony, Chrissy, all very funny guys (usually unintentionally).

reply

Chrissy's intervention gets me every time, I made a MP3 track of that scene and play it during work haha.

reply

That is one of my favorite episodes of the entire series, and definitely one of my favorite scenes. Sil reading the little slip of paper and talking about Chris passed out in the toilet, with his hair in the toilet water - "disgustin'".

reply

Haha yup, Steven is such a good actor as he read that line from his paper, like a novice speech giver would.
Mine was when Ad was saying how Chris couldn't perform and the look on Paulies face. Or "what was it barking?" Like that is a legit reason to kill a dog hahhahaaha.

reply

I'm in my second run of The Sopranos, and yes I'd forgotten how funny it was too. During the first episode I laughed more than I've ever laughed while watching a tv series. I'm really going to love it!

reply

I am half way through season 1 on a rewatch after at least 7 years and it is the humour that really surprises me, I too had forgotten how funny it was.
It is well known that Paulie and Silvio had funny jokes, but I was surprised how funny Tony was, he has some great lines usually when he is frustrated by a situation, it feels very natural when he comes out with something.

reply

I also never expected it to be truly funny. That Pine Barrens episode is the funniest episode of a TV-show ever, and it's not even a comedy series.

Paulie is a great comic relief, but Tony and Chris had their moments too. Even Livia in her most deprived and negative way had her moments of comedy gold.

reply

That Pine Barrens episode is the funniest episode of a TV-show ever, and it's not even a comedy series.

Not even close. It's a funny episode, no doubt, but it's nowhere near the funniest episode of any tv-show ever. Maybe the funniest episode of any drama series ever, but not of any tv-show period.

reply

I love how Tony was stuck on Chris killing little Cosette, well after they passed the topic. It almost seemed like he could forgive the other stuff, BUT, killing little Cosette, that was the finale straw.

reply

That's because he knows "what it's like to lose a pet!!"

reply

That line from Tony was strangely prophetic: He tells Chris "I ought to suffocate you!" for killing Cosette, and.. uh.. yeah, you know.

Also, what I thought was the funniest line in the whole show:

"..Roadies?"

Never hate your enemies. It affects your judgment. -Michael Corleone

reply

I know that, It was just the idea that this big bad mob boss was stuck on the death of Adriana's little white poodle, and hearing him say "you killed little cosette" and wanting to inflict violence on him for that.

reply

Like so many sociopaths, Tony could only show true empathy for babies and animals.

Remember that by this time, Tony was still grieving over Pie-O-My. It was well within character for him to get most upset over Chris smothering a helpless little dog.

reply

I know what a sociopath is and their affinity towards babies and animals, I minored in psychology. With that said, stop trying to share your very basic knowledge with me, I only mentioned the incident for the humor.

reply

I like all the little nicknames they give each other. The funniest ones were when Tony called Phil "the Shah of Iran" and Johnny Sack "Count Chocula".

reply

I liked the headstone that said "PEEPS" in huge letters, and the conversation that Paulie and Chris had in "Pine Barrens"

Paulie: "You're not gonna believe this, but he killed 12 Czechloslovakians, and he was an interior decorator"

Chris: "Really? His place looked like *beep*

reply

sopranos was a true masterpiece, a "coming together" of amazing actors, amazing directors and amazing writers... and true comedy can only be achieved by this. Not some cheesy sitcom with predictable, forced jokes and a cheesy, fake laugh track that plays after every one of those cheesy jokes

reply

Possibly the funniest piece of dialogue in the whole show right there.....

reply

Probably one of the funniest things I've seen in film or television was when (potential spoilers, this is somewhere in season 6) Tony, Carlo, and the chubby, bald bodyguard guy are riding in a vehicle and discussing Vito being gay, and for some reason Carlo mentions an episode of the Twilight Zone and says something like "Just like Eddie Valentine....". Tony seems confused and says "Who, the guy from Philly?" Carlo responds "No he was a small-time hood who gets shot... c'mon, you must have seen that episode". Tony, clearly incensed, yells "Well maybe you should start sucking c*ck instead of watching TV land because Vito brought in 10x what you do in construction!" Implying that even though Vito might have been gay, he brought in a lot of money... Geez, I still laugh until my abs hurt whenever I see that scene, I guess it's a lot funnier having seen the episode Carlo is referring to

reply

I actually felt really bad for Carlo, Tony was a dick there haha.

reply

Tony was such a dick in the final season....to everyone. He had that period after he was shot in which "every day is a gift" and he was a lot nicer, then he got over that....around the time he figured out Chris was boinking Juliana Marguiles. The way he treated Paulie, Hesh, Carmela in particular near the end was despicable. I can't believe he was actually considering offing Paulie while they were in Florida....

reply

Yeah, it's very satirical in my opinion. Very funny.

reply

The trouble with that Paulie thing is I never believed for a second Tony would do it so the whole tension was kind of lost to me. But at the end of that episode, when Paulie is again yapping hard to the rest of the crew and Tony has a hilarious look of regret on his face, i laughed out loud. I laugh when I remember it, Gandolfini knew exactly how to capture the humor of a situation.

another funny line :

Melfi : The meaning is elicited through verbalization!
Tony : Yeah, and the gehaxahogan is framed up by the ramistam! (waves his hand dismissively and sighs in exasperation).
Melfi : Okay, so your wife, your family, your mistress ..
Tony : With my WIFE driving.

Rofl!

reply

LOL true, another funny scene is where AJ, Paulie, Meadow, etc are at a table together eating after (spoilers) Bobby Baccalieri's funeral at the very last episode of season 6 and AJ starts ranting about Al Qaeda then some random girl says "I don't know what you're trying to say, you're all over the place" and Paulie says "He's saying the framis intersects with the framistan approximately at the paranosta" or something lol

reply

I'm watching for the first time, and im thinking its hilarious, i laughed a lot during episode 2, great humor...
Now i understand how Matther Weiner came up with that comedy style, Sopranos its wonderful...

reply

Matthew Weiner had something to do with the comedy aspect? That's cool. guess they had a separate comedic writer to put in stuff to make the audience laugh

reply

No, Weiner only entered on the fifth season, i guess. I meant that he picked up the "Mad Men" sense of humor by working on "The Sopranos", cause im finding very hilarious, just like Mad Men. And not only that, a lot of other similarities, like the pace, and the writing style, like plant this little thing here, that's going to make sense only two episodes from now, the anti hero...

All David Chase's fault. hahaha

Im finding Sopranos amazing.

reply

Yeah, had the humour to balance out the misery that Boardwalk Empire severely lacked.

reply

I always thought it was a black comedy. I loved Tony when he referred to Prince Matchabelli, the perfumer, when he meant Machiavelli's, The Prince. As in, "Yeah, I've read Prince Matchabelli."

I loved it when he just killed someone or had a hand in something bad, his eyes went out of focus when he gave a lame excuse. Or when he killed Christophuh but told everyone that Chris was not wearing a seat belt implying that is why he died.

reply

Zu! Sun Tzu you *beep* ass kiss!

that gets me every time, the way Sil throws it at him like a rock lol
