Misquoting Aliens

Mark says "Marines, we are leaving!!!", whereas in the actual movie, Hicks says "Drake, we are leaving!"

Censor *beep* Sucks.

I always remembered that line as "Marines, we are leaving" too. He also misquotes Luke Skywalker and says "It seems like I'm going nowhere" instead of "It looks like I'm going nowhere", but whatev....

Sometimes a line of dialogue becomes famous in a different form than its originating movie (if memory serves, IMDb recently had a Hit List feature about this). And it does so simply because the original line sometimes isn't as fun or striking as the way we "remember" it.

For example, nowhere in TOS does Kirk say "Beam me up, Scotty" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beam_me_up,_Scotty), but it's still cherished as one of the most iconic lines in television history.

Folks,

My girlfriend frequently cites the misquoting of FIRST CONTACT in FE, "The Line must be drawn here...and no further!" She's bothered Mark doesn't use the exact line "The line must be drawn here! This far and no further!" Well, during the scene, the "this far" portion sounded odd coming from Mark, hence we cut it.

Thing is...much of the time...they don't quote the films EXACTLY. They don't know a guy named "Drake," hence the generic "MARINES!" which refers to all the friends.

It's obviously still a reference to ALIENS, but not an exact quote.

Still works in the film.

The characters ADAPT lines to work situationally. They're not just throwing out EXACT quotes.

They don't have to. They all know what they're referring to.

Essentially, geek conversations are metaphor. Quotes, whether paraphrased or not, are like subcultural ideograms. They convey bundles of information with a few short words and they're a sign that we are of the same 'tribe'. We get quotes for shows or movies we've never seen because they have become part of our language, and once they are in everyday conversation, they become subject to minor changes over time.

A quote doesn't have to be exact or literal in order to get across meaning, nor does the situation have to perfectly apply. "Can't do it, Sally" doesn't have to mean only "Sorry I can't save you from impending death", and it's far cooler than a plain "I can't do it." Everyone I know yells, "Marines, we are leaving!" and they will continue to do so no matter how many times they are reminded, "No, it's Drake." It just sounds better, seems to make more sense, and that's often how we all misheard it the first time.

(Sorry for the Next Gen reference, but it seemed necessary for a post about metaphoric language.)

Holy...wait, you're the director! Awesome! I met Ellie Cornell at Monster Mania the other day and brought up Free Enterprise. She seemed happy to hear it.

Folks,

Theora23 absolutely gets it. My girlfriend is always grilling me about why the FIRST CONTACT line, "The line must be drawn here, and no further," is also misquoted.

The point is...it's not the line itself...but the spirit of the line that's important. Why say "Drake, we are LEAVING," when you don't have a friend named Drake?

Kudos to Theora.

Best regards,

RMB

reply

Hmmmf...in such a case, where I might be looking at a friend of mine and saying "Drake...we are LEAVING!" said friend will understand that I am addressing him and not some person named "Drake" that he is unaware of.

E.g. one quote my friends and I use often, whenever somebody neglects to tell us some important piece of information, is "Important safety tip...thanks, Egon!" Needless to say, none of us is named Egon.

However, to each his own, YMMV.

reply

Folks,

I'd buy that...but what if you're with a bunch of friends...and not just one...?

It's all about the spirit of the quote...and when it's employed. Sometimes only an exact quote will do...sometimes you only need to suggest it...

reply

Beware the power of suggestion, young Grasshopper.

It's funny cause my friend and i were just out the other night and he quoted "ghostbusters" "I love this plan, i'm excited to be a part of it." and his girlfriend gave him *beep* for not getting the line right, even though he did...fortunetly, i was there to back him up.

This whole thread reminds me of the bit near the beginning of Scream 2 when the film class is talking about sequels and someone brings up Aliens and says, "Get away from her, you bitch!" and Randy corrects him saying, "I believe it's 'Stay away from her, you bitch.'" Which was wrong. The first guy was right and I was never sure if that was intentional or not. And I hate hate HATE when people say, "Luke, I am your father." I think that's the only line I correct people on when they misquote it because it bugs me so much.

And speaking of the guys quoting throughout this movie- After watching this movie for nine years, it wasn't until last night that I realized that Rob threw out that 'Ceti Alpha V' line while they were driving to Toys R Us. I think that was the most random quoting in the entire movie.

reply

I will say though when Mark said to Robert "It was a bad call, bad call Ripley" wouldn't he have replaced Ripley with Robert since it was his name

reply

"Do or do not, there is no try" - it's amazing how often I use that wee gem when I'm teaching the lads at work.

Understand exactly where Robert is coming from, sometimes paraphrasing works best when ceratin situations demand it.
