question about the last letter

As I always say before beginning anything on these message boards; sorry if this has already been asked.

Now, this is my problem. Dora is writing a letter to Josue at the end of the movie when she is on the bus. She expects him to read it. But is it not true that Josue and the other boys can't read? If someone could clear this up for me, I'd be really happy.

Thanks in advance!

Dora catches Josue when he takes the letter out of the drawer and asks him whether he knows reading. This can give a clue. But they can find somebody to read for them anyway. the reason why they didn't read their father's letter was a kind of respect I think..

For her it was probably more important that she wrote the letter rather than him reading actually it. She does say 'this is the first letter i have written in a long time' or something along those lines.
