Question

This may be a stupid question but what is the education system like in Brazil? What is the illiteracy rate, and how many people drop out of school and when? Before watching this movie I didn't know that so many people in Brazil, successful or not, couldn't read or write.

Please don't take this as an offense if you're from Brazil I'm just surprised and want to find out.

Illiteracy (you mean analphabetism) rate in Brasil is 11,4% - two percentual points higher than Mexico (9,4%). What is the point?

I think everyone knew what he meant when he wrote "illiteracy." However, thanks for a new vocabulary word.

Just some food for thought,

Why would anyone bother sending letters when they knew the recipients couldn't read them in the first place? Especially, in the case of the father's letter to his illiterate sons? "I better get some help to write a letter, and hope someone knows how to read in thousand mile radius to read it out to my sons!" Good job Nora came along.

It's an old tradition. Before the invention of the telephone, if someone travelled away from his house, to work or to start a new life, he or she wouldn't want to loose all contact with family and friends, would?
They would ask someone to write a letter home for them, and the recipient would ask to a priest to read it.
There is an old funny poem about an illiterate sailor who wants to send a letter to his bride and end up with the whole town knowing of it's content before her.
