And the winner is...

Well, well... All votes have been computed, checked and rechecked, from chimpan-A to chimpan-Z! Guess which show won? I'll let you guys think about it while you have a banana.

And the winner is...

Planet of the Apes (1974)

I just hope this one doesn't make a monkey out of me, because I was the one to nominate it. (You're off the hook this time, dtmuller.)

Here's a compilation of the votes and points:

1st 2nd 3rd Votes Points
1) Planet Of The Apes 2 1 0 3 8
2) FlashForward 1 2 0 3 7
3) Persons Unknown 1 1 0 2 5
4) Alien Nation 0 0 3 3 3
5) Battlestar Galactica 0 1 1 2 3
6) Max Headroom 1 0 0 1 3

I'll notify the Planet of the Apes (1974) board this Sunday. We can start with this new show next Friday, September 12th.

As for Invasion Earth, it's time to leave this world before it's nuked bit by bit. It was great being here, but now we're moving on.

So long, nDs and Echos. I can't say I knew any of you.

Doctor Zaius Doctor Zaius, do you also hate every chimp you see? One of the greatest episodes ever.

As they say, monkey see, monkey write it on IMDB board. Just think of how many jokes like this we can have for the next 14 episodes!

I seriously considered voting for this, but didn't because I couldn't find it anywhere. Any of you folks have a suggestion?

I found the DVDs for sale on Amazon. A little expensive, though.

Got mine ordered anyhow.

Anyone else know a cheaper (or free) source, then it would probably be appreciated among the group.

I'd've gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling kids.

Way to go, bob! Your team spirit is truly remarkable.

It's too bad you're guys are having problems finding this. Sorry, I never thought of availability issues. I'm the one who put it forward, because I already had the show, and assumed you guys would be able to find it as well. It'd be a pity if we had to pass this one.

reply

To be honest, I liked the idea of PLANET OF THE APES too. The only reason I didn't vote for it was that leaving it off my list completely gave my FLASHFORWARD an actual shot at winning (which it almost did.) I am at a point in my life that I just can't buy more DVDs (I have too many DVDs already, which I'll probably never manage to watch in my lifetime -and that doesn't include all the old VHS tapes I have) and money is tight anyway. However, some years back FOX MOVIE CHANNEL ran a series of movies culled from the TV show - 5 in all, consisting of 10 episodes of the show - and I recorded them all. Plus I had two episodes I recorded back when SCI-FI ran them (they were still called SCI-FI back them) and incredibly they are not among the 10 episodes from the movies. So, if I can find them all (and I'll certainly try to) I can still do 12 out of the 14 episodes with you.

Good to know. Indeed, the TV movies are just episodes edited together. TV.com, for example, describes which episodes are in each movie.

reply

Darn maybe we should pick something we all can get.

reply

Let's decide this then. Say what you prefer, and let's vote on that. To me, I'd watch Planet Of The Apes and it's easily available with torrents. But if the group decides, then we should go with the second most voted, FlashForward. I'm sure that one is easily available.

Personally I didn't vote for FF because, even though I liked it, I've seen it recently and it wouldn't be much fun. But, again, picking something everybody can watch is a strong argument.

Hey, here's a crazy thought, a Solomonic decision. It would be unfair to those who don't want to spend 36 dollars and change in a DVD set (I wouldn't). But it would also be a shame if bob's investment wet to waste, since he has already ordered the Apes DVDs. So, divide and conquer I say. I'm perfectly willing to do both shows. Why not? Those of us who can and want, join me in the Apes board. Those who can't join me in the Flashforward board.

How does that sound? I should be letting the board(s) know this Sunday.

Hmmmm very reasonable, as I recall, DT does not use torrents for very good reasons. I myself have these shows from a very long time ago. It certainly seems unfair to switch after bob has already purchased the dvd set. I myself will go ahead join the apes watch having seen flash forward relatively recently. I think your solution as moderator is very fair. just my 2 cents.

Checked all of the libraries in metro Detroit and unlike my lucky hit on Dark Skies, this one is nowhere. Ditto for every legitimate streaming source I could find, and like Brimfin, I'm not in a position to buy the DVD set.

But it sounds like I'm the only one with no access. I have no objection to just sitting this one out and catching you on the other side. I did that with Kolchak: The Night Stalker, The Lone Gunmen, Tales of the Gold Monkey, Firefly, Odyssey 5 and Pushing Daisies , so it's not as though that would be unprecedented. (I still get headaches thinking about the blurry, flickering, subtitled version of Pushing Daisies that I gave up on after two or three episodes.)

by dtmuller » Checked all of the libraries in metro Detroit...

For a moment I thought a Robocop joke was coming in... I wondered if you were checking all the OCP libraries in Delta City? It's because I just watched Robocop (1987) last night. Hey we could do Robocop the TV series one of these days.

But it sounds like I'm the only one with no access. I have no objection to just sitting this one out and catching you on the other side.

Or you can join me in the FlashForward board. If there are people interested, we'll do that too. What do you think? OK, guys, you have all day to decide. Stone already said he'll tackle Apes, and so will I.

Now, if there someone else is interested in FlashForward, we'll do that as well. You have all day to manifest yourselves, OK? I'll notify the board or boards tonight (my night, which is quite earlier for some of you).

reply

That's an interesting proposal you brought up. Of course, since I am the one always nominating FLASHFORWARD, I'm interested in doing it before it possibly disappears from IMDB. At least I can see now why it never got selected - as some of you have already seen it recently. So I'll be glad to join you on the FF board. I'd even be willing to try to do both boards. It's just I have now entered into the busy season in my work life. Up to the end of August, I often had Fridays off, but now I won't. It'll make it harder to do two shows, but I'm willing to try. But if we do this, what happens when APES finish and there's still 8 weeks left on FF?

Another thought: what if we did FLASHFORWARD now and then APES after? That would give me time to possibly make a copy of my APES tapes for dtmuller. Plus, bob said he might have to take a trip soon anyway. If we wait, he may get back from his trip and have time to do all the APES episode making his investment more worthwhile.

Stone has shown no interest in watching FlashForward, and this might be the case with others. So far you're the only one who said you want to join me in the FlashForward board. But it's all up to you guys. I don't decide anything alone. Discuss this today and tonight I'll notify the board or boards. To me either way is fine.

What I was thinking is after we've finished the Apes run (14 episodes, the Apes fans would either wait for four weeks, or join the FF board for its final episodes.

I hope dtmuller accepts your offer. But I don't think it would take you long to copy just the first TV movie and send it to dtmuller so he can start next Friday if he so chooses.

I haven't even finished locating everything yet, let alone having time to copy anything. Given time, I could hopefully copy it to a few disks and mail it out, but I don't have time, money or disks to be mailing out individual episodes each week.

Oh, I see. Well, let the group manifest itself. So far only you and charmedwon666 have said anything about the double board idea. Most likely we'll move on with both so everybody is (moderately at least) happy, but in case someone else has different ideas, let me know by tonight, OK?

reply

We've lost power, so I'm limited to posting via phone. Painful. I'm going to decline brimfin's offer. Thanks anyway. I'll go ahead with FlashForward if that's an option.

reply

OK, it's about time we moved. See you at the Planet of the Apes or FlashForward board. Or both! Let's have double dun this time. Over and Out!

I still have faith we can all watch the apes. When is the cut off time?

Yes, and it looks like I'll now be in for Planet of the Apes. So how are we proceeding?

Well, since it seems brimfin is very engaged in the FlashForward idea, we're doing both as promised. I even posted our greeting post in both boards already. The problem is that this whole mess about Apes availability is not clear for me yet. But if he changes his mind , decides to stick with Apes alone and everybody has solved their Apes availability issues, then, we'll naturally focus on Apes alone.

There was also brimfin's excellent suggestion of doing FlashForward AFTER Apes, then with everybody, frankly preferable, but nobody but brimfin said anything about it, so I assume it was rejected for lack of interest.

In a nutshell, we're doing both boards, unless the group speaks against that.

reply

Well, since I'm now in for both, we can do them sequentially or in parallel, as far as I'm concerned. Although if we go in parallel, it might be a good idea to go to a different night for one of them. It's pretty rare that I have a chance to sit down and watch two hours of TV in a sitting. I have about five movies in my Roku queue, some of them for months, that I haven't had time to get to.

But if you want a straight answer, my preference would be sequential.

reply

by dtmuller » But if you want a straight answer, my preference would be sequential.

Frankly, yes, I'm craving for straight answers and a final definition. This is getting tiring, my head is spinning a little, and I feel I'm not making things simpler, but more complicated instead, because, let's face it, that's how I roll... Can't help it. It's a curse and a gift... Often more of a curse.

The FlashForward choice was considered only as an alternative to those who couldn't by any reasonable means get the Apes episodes. I don't want anybody to feel excluded, as I wouldn't want to be left out myself in case you guys chose a show that was unavailable to yours truly here in my little corner of the world. That was the sole reason why I even brought up the second placed show, FlasForward, as an alternative, a B-Plan.

But if you found the Apes movies, and so has Brimfin, charmedwon666 already has them, I downloaded the episodes, bob has ordered Planet of the Apes DVDs, FlashForward really seems to be not necessary as an alternative after all. (We still have to hear from wlcetbg, though.)

If everybody has Apes, we do Apes, and that's it. A second show makes no sense. And if we pick Apes, at the end of it we resume these discussions.

So, unless somebody really, really, really can't get the Apes episodes, we're doing just one show, Planet of the Apes. At least with me as moderator.

And I really hope there are no more hiccups from now on. Oh, boy, now we know why elections, plebiscites and referendums cost millions. Just imagine all the bureaucracy involved in REAL elections...

reply

C'mon, if this were a real election, I'd be insisting that anyone who didn't want to watch Persons Unknown was a gun-toting, commie, Bible-thumping fundamentalist, bleeding-heart, right-wing, atheist, Nazi, gun-grabbing whacko.

And then I'd start getting nasty.

reply

And I'd be accusing you guys, who passed on Total Recall 2070 several times, of being right-wing neoliberals (if that makes any sense), homophobic evangelists, associated with former military torturers, or corrupt populists or former communist terrorists... It's just we have presidential and gubernatorial elections next October. But really things are not that bad.

reply

Madp you are doing an awesome job. I'm good for both if you like or we could do apes first then flashforward. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks, and you have nothing to be sorry for. If you can do Apes, then let's all do Apes! At the end of Apes we open discussions again.

I hope this is settled now... I'll rectify my FlashForward board announcement.

reply

You are the man MadP. All my time as Mod is junior varsity compared to you, I guess what i'm saying is.....You have Mod skills hee hee.

I have zero desire to see flash forward again this soon after watching it. I caught it during my hospital adventure so it hasn't even been 3 months since I've seen it........Apes all the way here though I recall it to be horrible when it originally aired. But when you think about it....the majority of 1 year shows should be shouldn't they?

reply

I appreciate the compliments. It's funny I should be the moderator when most of the time I'm the one needing to be moderated...

As for Apes, I have nice memories from it, but that was from a very, very long time ago. And with all these current Ape movies, the comparison could be interesting.

reply

OK So I guess that brings us back to Apes after all the monkey business, huh?

Definitely even more monkey business from now on. We even have an emoticon for that. Here's our official mascot from now on:
