Why was this filmed in Berlin?

Bought a couple of those $1 Walmart DVDs of this show and am perplexed as to why they shot it in Germany? Can only assume it was extremely cheap to do so as the dollar had a very good exchange rate at that time.

Looking at the sets (if those flimsy bits of cardboard can be called "sets") only reinforces my assumption. Good Lord was this show ever done on the cheap! While I don't expect big production values from early televison shows, this one sets a new low.

And that acting, hoo wee, high school play time was in effect here. Sorry to be so critical, but it is what it is. Guess kids from that time weren't too savvy and found this acceptable. It's an interesting time capsule nonetheless, and I enjoyed viewing some quite rare VW's (there's a split window and a 4 door Bug in one of the episodes).

Believe it or not, this series was an import from Europe, but because of the time and the reconstruction being funded by the U.S., it was spoken in English. It was produced by a German television company, but what the hey? We didn't care back in the 1950's. It was a lot of fun, but not nearly as good as Rocky Jones (which really wasn't that good, but the Orbit Jet was cool).

Jah vole! Thanks for the explanation, that makes sense. Speaking of postwar Germany, I have a German model train that says "made in the US sector" on the underside. A relic of the times to be sure!
