I found that this movie, though disturbing to some, can still give a good message and lesson to anyone who watches it: carnal desires can never be satisfied and eventually lead to ruin. For, the two characters, as they went deeper and deeper into physical pleasure, were found to become more and more mentally miserable. This is something that I think modern culture can learn from.

I agree completely. Though twisted this film is a great representation of what happens when the flesh and carnal desire take over. I think this happens both in reality, in the spritual and then outworks into a mental obscurity. Your arms are cut off and your feet. You become inhuman and to an effect though to some it may seem strange you are so blinded that you actually think it is a good thing. You may think it fun or pleasurable when in fact all you are doing is bringing yourself into a miserable death and wasting your life away. Notice though the first steps of the the decent came with blindness. this not just physical blindness but spiritual blindness and mental blindness as well.

To me this is probably the most erotic and thought provoking film of it's kind.
Erotic from the way he speaks to her, talking constantly about touching her body (have to admit it arouses me a little) and thought provoking for the reasons cited above...too much of anything, even sxual pleasure, can be dangerous because it will always leave you craving more until finally there is no more and it progresses into pain and ultimately consumes you.
As a sidenote, I was surprised to see that the film came out in '69!
