I'm gonna be in this play

We're doing this for the fall play at my school, and we found out our parts today. I go to an all girls school, so girls play guys, and I'm Lysander! I'm really excited because I'd never gotten a lead role before!

Yeah, I'm gonna be playing the part of Demetrus within the next 5 weeks (Wednesday 26th October) + I'm presently finding it very difficult to find a character analyis of him on-line.

Could anyone help me out?

reply

Any one of the 4 lovers could have their character analyzed by a single phrase: "Young hormonal idiot". None of them is thinking clearly...of course the parental types and the laws of the place are not helping. But what you have to remember is that in that era, they were probably as young as 14-15 if they were getting married, and that is not a good age to be making permanent decisions about your life. The mood swings are tremendous, even without Puck's help.

Believe me, I have seen the overlapping love triangles of Helena, Demetrius, Lysander and what's-her-name played out many times through Jr. high, High school and college.

reply

congratulations! i played bottom in high school too. and it was the most fun i've ever had in a play!

reply

wow i love how everyone is doing this for fall show. Ours is an adapted version where the ugly girls are played by guys but I'm still Helena because I'm just awesome. (I'm a girl if that made no sense.) o that my prayers could such affection move!

reply

Thought i'd add this, I was in the play in high school too. I was Theseus. It's interesting to see all of the productions being done in school.

reply

I'm not in school. I'm doing a National Diploma in Performing Arts (Acting)... And I'm gonna be applying for Drama Schools within the next few days...

(So yeah, scary time of my life at this moment in time, lol).

I'm a fella... by the way.

reply

I got cast the other day in our school's play....I'll be playing Bottom too, one of my favourite characters ever in a play.

reply

I was in a production of it a couple of years ago and I played Demetrius (I'm a boy, by the way).

reply

me too!

but im a narrator :-(
i wanted to be titania, but we have more boys than girls, and the narrator had to be a girl, so a guy is playing titania

its sooooooo funny!

reply

I got great reviews from my show. We set ours in the 50's so it was pretty awesome. Instead of that bird song that Bottom sings I sang Blue Moon in a loud obnoxious voice and had to do a crazy dance to go with it.

I've played Bottom too! Seriously, this play is so much fun to put on.

reply

We just got done with this play and i was Titania and it was AMAZING!!!! we had a problem with bottoms ass head falling off when he got on the table, we did theatre in the round, and we had to play it off quickly. It was SOO MUCH FUN

reply

Hey guys,

Just wanted to stop by and let yous all know that our peformance got some fantastic reviews...

Oh By the way... The girl who played Helena was like, really, really hot, lol.

And I had to keep rejecting her advances...

*sigh*

lol.

reply

In my college acting class, we are just doing monologues from Shakespeare. So we just chose what we wanted to do. I chose to do Titania in the monologue where she is inviting Bottom back to her garden. Yes, I know it's very sexual. LOL! And I am a girl, so nothing out of the ordinary for me.

reply

Cool! I was in this 2 years ago and I played Hermia!

"Remember ven Ulla dance? Ulla dance again!"

reply

I was the stage manager for this play at my school at the beginning of the year. And the guy that played Oberon - King of the Faeries, used to joke around that he wasn't manly because he was king of the faeries.

reply

thats crazy talk! oberon is the manliest fairy ive ever heard of...

We're doing it in spring. Auditions are coming up and I hope to get Puck. We're doing a really cool contemporary version and adding music.

reply

I just got cast as Bottom for my school's production of this. I'm not really that familiar with Shakespeare beyond Romeo and Juliet (and I call myself an actor. Shame on me I know) so this story's almost completely new to me. Which version of the movie should I watch to get a feel for the characters? The teacher just said those unfamiliar with the play shouldn't watch the films so they could develop their own take on the character.

reply

We're doing ours in May. I've been cast as Peter Quince.

I just got cast as Nick Bottom too! I love playing comedic parts, and especially like the over-the-top performance I have to give at the end of it. Before watching this movie, I knew my character was comedic and greatly exaggerated, but watching this version of the movie helped me develope my character further (mainly becuase of the amazing performance that Kevin Kline gives). Good luck!

reply

Well if I don't watch one of the movies I'll pretty much do what I did in the audition and make it all up as I go.

I did just the play within a play scene in school today. It was this really nice presentation called Shakespirence. It was a lot of fun. I played Thisbe (I'm a guy by the way). It was so funny.

O, and the whole Oberon being manly or not. In the opera version, Oberon is a countertenor. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, that's a male with the range of Alto or Mezzo Soprano, or, in other words, a really high-pitched male. I thought it was weird when I heard about it online. I would figure he would be much lower (baritone or bass). I mean, the more childish charater of Puck is a tenor Why make Oberon so high? I really don't know if this means anything (I myself sing both baritone and falsetto soprano, but thought I'd add it.

reply

I'm going to try to post a video or something of my school's presentation on youtube or something because, plays at my school are a rarity. It's something to be remembered.

reply

Hello!

I am also in the play! I was cast as Oberon, the King Of The Fairies! I have a lot of lines to study though!!

reply

I did an abridged and translated version at a local children's theater a couple of years ago for a summer workshop in which I played both Bottom and Egeus. I must say that I got the biggest laughs I've ever recieved as Bottom, especially during the suicide scene of "Pyramus and Thisbe."
