The Hunchback of Notre Dame

In some ways, the plot of this movie is reminiscent of the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Agreed, the protagonist is not physically deformed but mentally, and the antagonist has a material motive instead of jealous-love. However, the theme of pure love, sacrifice and separation appears to be similar.

I was surprised to see more people making a connection with "Cuckoo's Nest" merely because of the mental asylum scenes. I think that misses the point.

Anyone else feel that way?

"Guna" isn't connected to "One Flew..." There's another Tamil film called
"Manasukkul Matthappu" that borrowed heavily from the latter.

But also similarly, your connection to "Hunchback of Notre Dame" seems a bit tenuous when based on the widely-used theme of love and sacrifice.

I wonder if the other Tamil film understood Cuckoo or just copied the crazy asylum antics? Like Ghajini is called a "remake" of Mmento but it completely missed the point. It just had a forgetful hero and real revenge, which is not what Memento was about.

Wish they'd subtitle all the lovely south Indian films upon release, so linguistically-challenged Indians like us could also see them in theatres. That would be such fun (and open a huge new market for the producers!!).
