You know you've seen too many movies when...

..you are 35 minutes in to a film and have it all figured out. That was the point I was at and I'm still watching the movie just hoping there is for some real twist that I haven't foreseen.

(POTENTIAL SPOILER ALERT)
I've already had a few problems with this movie and noticed several issues with continuity.

- When Jane and Douglas dance her head is on his shoulder facing away from him and they are talking and then suddenly she's facing him to finish the sentence before they kiss.

- After Hall as Ferguson is shot by Ashton in both the shoulder and the leg he limps off to hide by the pool. When he jumps out to attack Ashton it's as if he's not even injured. Then when they fall in the pool there is no blood. It's as if he wasn't shot at all.

- From the moment I saw the boat figurehead in Grierson's shop I thought it resembled Jane. Now they've made a point of showing it several times and I believe it was even moved to be in the frame when Grierson shows Hall/Ferguson the tuxedo. This has yet to come up in the movie and I might very well be wrong but it seems like that her face being familiar (while I'm confident Jane will have an alt character in the 30's simuulation, that maybe the figurehead was her face too) This is just a guess.

So clearly the letter is for Hall to tell him HE is living in a simulation and that his black out's are because someone is taking over his body. It's just silly that it's not halfway in to the movie and this much is obvious because of how they keep saying things and pointing out details. They explain too much. I think Bierko's acting is pretty terrible and that adds to the giving away of the story but bad writing like "why would Fuller write to me about the limitations of the simulation?"

Well I'm now where Whitney has to wake Hall up from the simulation because he didn't engage the timer that originally said "timer set for 120 minutes" and more recently said "timer set for two hours". Why was that not kept consistent? Stupid.

I'm watching this because it was recommended to me after I really enjoyed Dark City. That movie had it's own flaws but I found it very enjoyable after having avoided watching it for years.

I hope someone will reply with something interesting and not asking me what the point was of my post, or tear me down if I was wrong in my guess, etc. etc.

Watch The Uninvited and November (Courteney Cox) and try to beat your record. I didn't get any of the three. How long did it take you to figure out The Sting?

reply

I've not seen either of those thrillers you've mentioned. The Sting with Redford and Newman?

reply

Don't watch The Uninvited. It's crap. Watch A Tale of Two Sisters.

That was my problem, too. Knew what was going on way too early, and as a result the movie felt very slow as I waited for the characters to catch up. Cool concept, and enjoyed the ending, but experience was marred by anticipating where the movie was headed.

i was half watching and half doing work on the PC and i knew the underlying premise when Ashton explained it....but you cannot guess the ending surely, because how can u tell if dying when you download would get your program uploaded into your real body?

if gretchen Mol's character knew that, then is it murder for her to set up the cop to kill David?

reply

"if gretchen Mol's character knew that..."

Murder or justifiable homicide I'm not sure between, but it seems from the story that she did know, because she tells Doug right away that she has so much to tell him in 2024.

You could postulate that the character's personality is stored in the users mind for safekeeping while the users is in the characters. and that death in the simulation would jolt the body awake instantly before the reswap has a chance to happen

What's the point of your post?

Seriously, you have to remember the movie was made before the Matrix and all the other VR / alternate reality films of that era came out.

If you know there's a twist, and are looking for it, it's much easier to spot. People watching this without that knowledge wouldn't be looking for it, and will generally be surprised.

I thought it was very well done, with an excellent twist that I've never seen in quite that way. And I can usually figure out most films before the end. (Usual Suspects, Sixth Sense, etc.)

Mulholland Drive may be better for you if you want more of a challenge.

reply

Yeah. You must be badass. I watched over 2000 movies but still can't catch this plot twist.

reply

Probably not a badass. He just likes to lie online and make up stories. There are always these kind of people: I figured out the whole story 2 minutes into the movie! I am so cool and clever!

reply

*beep* kids posting about movies as their watching..... Just watch the movie, sit there, and shut the *beep* up!

He believes that there is only a one in a billion chance that this world of ours is real. He's convinced it's a simulation. He's got some pretty good evidence to back it up.
