The ending confused me totally...
Were they supposed to be enjoying a simulation world and met inside? When they woke up at the end, where were they? Very confusing ending, although the rest was great.

Exactly! That's why the film ended as if an old CRT TV was being switched off.
shareWhen they woke up at the end, where were they? The real world, year 2024, as far as we know. Of course, it is possible that what the characters believe is the real world is just another simulation, but there's nothing in the movie to indicate that.
"there's nothing in the movie to indicate that". Yeah there is, the movie ends with a Tv effect. The white line that appears briefly when you shutdown some old TV's. Which means they were monitored as well, just that perhaps nobody actually bothered to "take control" of one in the "real" world or there were not documented cases.
shareYep yep yep. I remember that specifically and going, "Aw, man!"
Still, can't say I didn't expect it a little bit.
Cool movie, anyways... "The Matrix" without the kung fu. Sorta
"Which means they were monitored as well"
No, that doesn't necessarily mean that at all. It was the end of the movie, not an event that happened in the movie's story. The same goes for when any other movie fades or cuts to black at the end, it doesn't mean it suddenly got dark in the story, or that some unseen observer character closed his eyes.
Simulations were the theme of this movie, and someone may have simply thought the TV turning off effect at the end went along with the theme. If they had zoomed out after and shown that someone had been watching a monitor that just turned off, that would be a different story. Otherwise, there's nothing to prove that it wasn't just a stylistic way of fading to black to end the movie.
But that would be too obvious which is the point. It leaves you wondering because the others thought their world was real
share@MaximRecoil: Yea, your answer is 100% correct. The film is actually crystal clear. The only "question" is the obvious one: Is 2024 just another simulation?
shareI've not seen this in a while but the fact the real person can have the conscience of a virtual version of himself go into his mind when he dies might be evidence that the real person isn't actually real.
Obviously it's all open for debate/interpretation which makes the film really interesting
Or that its a self-perpetuating flaw in deisgning technology that for some reason needs to transfer your conciuosness back and forth to experience the simulation.
shareI agree. The movie was great...didn't care for the ending. It spooked me out.
