Why did they care just about districts and not about a state title?

District titles are great too and I understand the coach had like a streak of them, but I never understand why they never seemed to care about winning a state title. Also, the final game of them winning, do they not go further in the state playoffs, correct? I don't get why they treat it like their last game.

gotchya. I guess I just didn't understand how the Texas state playoffs work. Up here in Michigan, once you qualify for the playoffs, you win the districts by winning the first 2 playoff rounds, and then have to win 2 more games to get to the state title game.

The other poster was wrong. Texas and Oklahoma are the same and it's just like the NFL. You play your district games and the top teams from each district go to the STATE Playoffs. It ends up like one big tournament

I guess if you win district it may be considered a winning season and the coach can keep his job....

I always wondered the same thing. I played hs football in Texas, district titles are great but if you played for the powerhouse schools...it's all about winning state! I liked this movie, but Friday Night Lights is a true story and has it exactly right.

They didn't want to extend the movie into the playoffs. Making the "District Title" the ultimate goal allows the movie to end when it did.

I get that was the better place to end the movie, but does that mean that Mox abandoned them for state? because he said he never played football again so apparently he decided to leave the team for the state games.

Most high schools have a lot of "honor" in being district champions because the state has so many high schools, chances of winning are slim and holding district titles is bragging rights for your region. Locally, you're the best. You never actually see people from the ther districts so the local bragging rights really does matter. But that even goes for pro and college sports too. The Atlanta Braves held high honor for years for being division champs so many years in a row. You celebrate the achievement.
