Only 2 state titles?

It just seems if Bud Kilmer was the amazing coach he was made out to be he would have won more than just two state titles, especially after winning 22 district championships.

Any thoughts?

It's funny - I thought the exact same thing when watching it last night. Here's Coach Kilmer - coaching god and only musters up two state titles in 30+ years of coaching. Now granted the competition in Texas is HUGE. But look at Bobby Bowden's career at Florida State - 12 ACC Titles and 2 National Championships ('93 and '99). Same with, dare I say it, Joe Pa - 3 Big Ten Championships ('94, '05, and '08) and 2 National Titles ('82 and '86).

Then again that's collegiate football.

Linzo, I'm a huge FSU fan and that was also the first thing that popped in my head when I read the original post! Bobby was in 6 title games in the 90's alone and only brought home two. Winning it all just is not easy.

It just seems that if they thought so highly of their Coach he would have won a few more titles... By the time this movie takes place they hadn't won a state title on 10 years....

Here in Washington state there are two current coaches that have 5 and 6 respectively... And a long time coach with a resume like Kilmer that has 4 or so...

I'm from PA, western PA to be exact, the section that produces more NFL players than even Texas.

Competition is unbelievably fierce. I've seen teams which would cream the state champions of practically any other state loose in the first round of the playoffs here. And you have to survive (win) 5 games to be the state champ. Texas is pretty much the same.

So, yeah, given that you can't recruit for high school, winning a state championship is a Huge deal. Winning 2 over a multi-decade career is a serious accomplishment.

Remember, in PA, there's only been a state playoff for 60 years. Texas is similar. So, out of 200 or so high schools, that means less than 1% won two. Probably a lot less.

Do you know how many outstanding HS football teams there are in Texas. The State is big enough to be its own country. The reason football is so sacred is because everyone expects there team to be incredible. To win one State title is amazing. Winning your district gets in you in the playoffs so doing that enough would keep you in the good graces of the fans. you could make your own professional league from players that come out of Texas alone.

The Coyotes are only like a 2A High School tho...maybe 3A, I can't remember.

It's a little weird that he only won state twice...but goes to show that this IS a little town in Texas and him being a huuuge deal is part of the point. He's just some high school football coach who's been coaching 2A or 3A and he won a couple state titles over 30 years with a bunch of district titles.

How many teams/schools do you have to rise above to win a State title in Texas. I think that possibly some areas would have larger, more physical players and hence the Coyotes might have strugged post winning the District and pushing towards State.
