I did NOT like the ending!!(should have be better!!)

I agree tha tis was a "novel" idea, to "keep us all guesing" as to whether Beecham lived or dies, BUT--once Eastwood sees him, there should have been MUCH more than a simple "hey" gesture between the two of them. I mean--Eastood risked it ALL to save Beecham, and one would think that he and Beechams family would have been friends for LIFE after that. Perhaps, a better scene would have been, as soon as Beecham saw Eastwood, he should have come over, and greeted him properly, once again thanked him for what he had done, and then invited him to be with his family for Christmas, since he had nowhere to go but a Hotel room.

To me--that would have made a GREAT ending.

Everett wasn't the type of guy that would 'do' Christmas dinner. He was in most respects a scumbag, lying, womanizing, drunk. His point of glory was getting to the truth and that was his 'salvation' if you will. I don't doubt that Beecham would be eternally grateful, and that they might have contact, but Everett didn't need a place to stay for Christmas, like the grasshopper being taken in by the ant. That would, in my opinion cheapen the character's absolution.

Beechum owes his life to Everett. In real life I'm sure there would have been more of a greeting, but for dramatical purposes, the ending is better as is. The shot of Everett about to take a puff from his cigarette, before thinking better of it and putting the cigarette out, is a fantastic. It suggests that Everett has been inspired to change his life through saving Beechum's.

the ending you suggest would have been amazingly cheesy. i thought the greeting was pretty well done, kinda mysterious and well acted because you could see beecum's gratefulness in his eyes.

however, it would have been much more powerful if beechum would have not survived. that would have strengthened the anti-death penalty message.

I have to agree that the ending botched up the entire movie for me. It almost felt like they rushed through it. If a man you know is responsible for saving your life and you see him on the street, you don't just give him a "hey gesture". That's the way I see it. Even though Everett might not have been of the type to go say hello, Frank certainly seemed to be of that type.

I actually thought the movie should've ended with the wife banging on the glass and us completely in the dark as to whether he lived or died. That would've been a haunting image to end on. I'm not usually a big fan of ambiguous endings, but given the theme of the movie, this was one instance where the message could've been much more powerful with an open ending.
