Costner too old for this part !

Maybe it's just me, but Garrett is a widower who loses his pregnant wife; Costner looks too old to be a new father. Robin's character has a what 8 year-old? That would put her in her 20's in first having her son, Garrett should have been played by a younger actor, there are plenty of brooding actors to choose from, Hollywood is loaded with choices.

Paul Newman was the best part of the movie. I so related with the argument between Garrett and his father when Garrett said, "it was none of his business," as a parent I realize children do not see that when our child suffers, we suffer. We want our children to be happy, and most of all, want them to find their soul mate to keep them happy, give them love, maybe even children so they can learn there is someone more important that they are, help them to keep growing as people.

Maybe Costner helped produce the movie so he got the part, but he was too old, just my opinion.

You think 44 is too old????? What are you, a snot nosed five year old? The real man now has two young boys by the Barbie doll clone. 44 is not too old to be a father, believe me. I have a friend who was married for 12 years before getting pregnant. Don't forget, men these days have a tendency to marry much younger chicks than they are. Whatever.

Dear Gremma:
This is the only comment of yours that I might disagree with. I sort of think their age difference was not really that great. If, however, you argued that he would make an unfit father because he himself was responding to life in a sort of listless, unpassionate (not dispassionate) sort of way and that he could take little joy in it, I might agree a bit more. I think he would be an unsuitable parent for that young boy, although we are led to believe that the two had a good time sailing. There is more to life and living together than sailing.

I don't think he was too old for this role, but he definitely was in "The Guardian".

Its like Harisson Ford was too old for indiana jones and the crystal skull.
And believe it or not, number 5 is on its way

Number 5 is not on its way.

the fact that Costner (in real life) became a new father again last year- 12 yrs after the production of this movie-- pretty much proves that the original poster was wrong.

Theresa clearly looked 35 or older and Costner looked good for 44 as Garrett. As such, there was nothing abnormal-looking about the couple.

My mom and dad were thirty-four when my brother was born, which is nothing unusual. By the time he was eight, they were forty-two. Big deal.
