Why whould he go sailing in such bad weather...? (spoilers)

Seems rather stupid to me & spoiled the story that a veteran sailor who had been sailing all his life would go out in a storm like that. He could of put the journey off to the following day no problem. I liked this film years ago but now it seemed too long, too slow & a silly ending.

I never watched the movie, but I did read the novel. I guess you must've been sleeping during the movie since you didn't understand his reasoning.

It wasn't a silly ending, it made perfect sense. Especially if you read the novel.

what if you didn't? why don't you watch the movie before you start contributing on a message board about the movie :)

i try to give my uneducated guess to the OP: i assume he did not plan to go directly into the storm but sail around it but then he saw the distress signal rocket and went for the hero stuff

I agree with you, I didnt read the novel so I have no comparison between the movie and the novel, so I can only give my opinion about the movie, since this is a movie data base :)

I think it was a good movie, didnt get that expected happy ending but then again I think that's why it was pretty good. Don't get me wrong I was pissed off and like OMG no way it can't be, but then again if it didn't end the way it did I don't think it would have affected me enough to be posting this right now. To each his own I guess.

The weather wasn't bad when Garrett first sailed out. It grew stormy. He couldn't have out ran the storm so he had to do what he could.

Actually, he appeared to be doing fine in the storm, it was rescuing the other people that did him in.

Any sailor who goes out for a long "blue water" sail pretty much expects to encounter weather. Storms come up quickly and out of nowhere on the open ocean. There is no planning to not go out in weather unless one is wisely seeking to avoid a known hurricane, which I am sure Garrett would have had the good sense to avoid. But, a good storm is pretty much a given. He was prepared for that. His boat was sea-worthy and he had the skill as a sailor to negotiate stormy weather.

At two hours and fifteen minutes, it is definitely on the long side, however, I thoroughly enjoyed the pacing. The ending was unexpected and definitely going for the jugular in terms of tear-jerking manipulation of the audience, but I enjoyed it very much, all in all. Having lived on the Atlantic coast for years, I very much enjoyed the life on the water aspect and the different pace of life found there. The surrounding landscape sure did not look like North Carolina, but, all the same, I was able to put that aside and go with the story.

Right. I found myself wondering not why he went out but why the family did. Why would an inexperienced "sailor" go out in bad or semi-bad weather with his wife and most importantly his young child?

Rest in Peace Russell Means...your legacy and impact will live on.

Thats a good point as far as why the other family went sailing in weather conditions such as that.

When Garrett was in his boat and ready to go on his trip, I remember his father saying to him "You know what your doing". Too me, I think Garrett was expecting to run into inclement weather.

I remember when Garrett encountered the other family, he was yelling instructions and I think he was saying to lower the sail.

Garrett would have been able to handle that storm.

Just curious how you know the other family was "inexperienced"?

Been a while since I watched this movie so not too particular on details at the moment as to why I came to this conclusion. Maybe I didn't "know" as in they explicitly stated it, I just assumed from the info given.

He was definitely owning that storm with confidence. He had a smile on his face even when it got bad. And I think he wanted to put his boat through the paces. He left port in rain gear so it wasn't a surprise.

As for the dumb family, I think they were just making a point of dumb rich people should have known better. But maybe their boat broke, who knows. The movie didn't address the nature of distress and I didn't know there was a book.
