Why do you love sad romances?

Hi guys,

since I have two kids, I had to stop watching Message in a bottle like 30 minutes before it ends, to go pick my kids from school.

I hate to do that, but hey, my days of watching a movie in a religious way (I'm a 'cinéphile') must be really over because little children they just won't give you 2 hours straight of peace and quiet (or you gotta wait until they sleep and since they wake up early I gotta sleep early too!!! I'm getting old...)

Anyway let's get to what I really wanted to say before to find myself talking about motherhood.

So I saw the last part of the movie just now and I felt as if someone punched me in the stomac! I don't like sad romantic movies. I did not expect that with the cover of the movie! I chose to watch that movie to feel good. I could see it would be a cheap romance. But haaaaaaa. Why? Why are there so many movies that end up badly? Sure because viewers love them. That's for sure. I know so many romantic movies with bad endings that are super popular. And I don't get that. I'm not interested in that. Life is hard enough. When I sit down to relax, I want to see two people who are in love beautifully, make love beautifully, and live beautifully without someone getting hit by a truck, a mountain, a knife, whatever. People seem to really die easily in movies! I'm telling you, my not-so-romantic partner is not dying anytime soon...

So please, and be thorough, why oh why do you love such a romantic super sad movie? Thanks for the inputs.

Just like life doesn't always (rarely) have happy endings neither should a movie.

This movie is interesting and thought provoking to me all the way through, even more so given the non gratifying ending.

Hi darling.

Thank you for this answer.

I am always surprised by the difference in people.

But I learn to live with it.

I hear what you say but to me to see the ending was devastating, and not only that, but it was too abrupt, too unreal, it was really like = the author now needs to get rid of the character.

I agree that things don't end up so great in life but they don't end up so often by sudden death or death at a young age as in the movies. Really, killing people in movies is known to be an emotional moment and obviously some people love that.

Some people adore watching horror movies, which does not make any sense to me. Life is full of horror enough. I don't want to add to it. When I watch a movie, I want to dream, I want to learn, but I certainly don't want to be devastated, certainly not by a fiction!

So, thank you very much. I hear what you say, doesn't ring exactly true to me. But I deeply appreciate your sharing.
