Pretty low score...

Why? This is a classic horror/comedy with brilliant actors and acting. The banter between the characters especially the sheriff and Hector is fantastic and so entertaining. And don't get me started about Betty White. Even though her part was small she was hilarious when she was on screen. I could gladly watch this movie over and over again not just because of the yummy Bridgette Fonda but because this is such a brilliant and entertaining masterpiece of a film. It definitely deserves a better rating.

I agree, love this movie.

The definition of a cult classic: A movie that is beloved and even considered among the greatest movies ever... to a select few people. Those people are rabid lovers of said film. The old Friday the 13th movies are in this category too. It just means some of us were touched by the "magic" of the movie. Good for us.

It's one of the worst movies ever made, it should be lower.

I'd rate it higher, but I can kind of understand the hate. I first saw it in the theater back when I was a teenager, and I didn't like it. I don't know why. But I didn't watch it again for a long time, at least 10 years. I always considered it this crappy movie and never gave it another shot, until I caught it on cable one night about 5 years ago and loved it. Owned it on DVD/Blu Ray since. You would think that as a 19 year old who grew up on movies like this that I would have loved it. But I was kind of going through a "everything used to be cooler in the old days" phase, where I basically hated all the new music and movies that were coming out. I was like Stan in South Park when everything was sh!t to him. I probably just sat there saying "It's not as good as Jaws" or something like that. Plus the setting wasn't very enjoyable. It was some weird local radio station (Dallas) premiere thing that this friend and I somehow wound up at, not knowing what the movie was even going to be about. I didn't think it was going to be about the 1980 hockey game or anything, but I also didn't know it was going to be about a giant crocodile until we got to our seats and the annoying little DJ told us so.

I've gotta disagree. It has a lot of great actors, but it's a really dumb movie imo. There really wasn't anything good about it.

reply

Why? I suppose 'cause it was probably billed as a horror flick -- which certainly wouldn't have drawn me in.

Exactly what it was, actually. Many horror/comedy films had ruined receptions due to marketing teams thinking it was intelligent to bill it as something completely different.

Sorta like the geniuses who billed Arachnophobia as a “Thrillomedy”. Huh? In that case, though, the movie still did well.

People often dislike movies if they don't get what they pay for. Sometimes the name alone can give a movie 2 stars lower rating if people are tricked by it, like with I, Robot. This movie kinda did nothing fully. It was not a serious movie. It was not a comedy and not a horror movie. I liked it for what it is. But many people who love horror will find it to silly. And many people who expect a comedy will find it to bland. It's just a very simple and short movie.

"It was not a comedy and not a horror movie."

Yes, it was a comedy; one of the funniest comedies ever made no less.

Because the average IQ is 100 (and someone with an IQ of 100 is dumb as a carp), and the humor in this movie is mostly in the dialog, and dialog-based humor goes over idiots' heads (unless it's "bathroom humor"). This is one of the funniest movies ever made.
