Could have been good

If they gave this movie a darker script and cut out all the dopiness, this might have been a good revenge movie. I mean look at the solid B cast this movie had. What a waste of talent!!

Word is that director John Avildsen made a great flick - then Jean-Claude decided to recut it so that it would play to his audience better. Avildsen is still not happy about it. As a result, when Van Damme was scheduled to appear at Cannes that year, the Troma team (Led by Lloyd Kaufman, one of Avildsen's proteges and old friends) hijacked his appearance, causing Van Damme to leave on his boat before he had arrived... This vignette is shown in the Troma documentary 'All The Love You Cannes'.

Shame the movie got screwed - Avildsen's a talented guy with an Oscar under his belt. Just goes to show that star power wins out in Hollywood when it comes to final cut.

There was some evident talent behind the film. It's a little baffling how the director went from the heights of Rocky to this film. Even as a fan of Van Damme, I have to admit this is a BAD film. It looks more upscale than some of his other DTV films, but it's just an overall mess. The jokes fall terribly flat, and everyone looks like they're in it for the paycheck. The plot is simple, but the editing/pacing makes it appear overly convoluted (especially with Trejo's Native American character).

Some of the gunplay action is actually well staged. However, you can tell why the director changed his name on the credits list before this turkey was released.

Alien Uprising was a cameo, but I agree it was worse than Desert Heat. Day of Reckoning was actually solid, if a bit stilted. I appreciate the experimental route Hyams took with that film. It didn't entirely pay off, but at least it felt fresh.

Dragon Eyes had a couple of decent fight sequences, but it was very mediocre overall. Almost all of these films were cameo performances, though.
