Anyone else find this movie hilarious?

I laughed harder at this movie than I did most of the comedies I've seen.
Maybe I'm just evil?

If you think that makes you evil, you are mistaken. This was a comedy in everything but the happy ending, and there is some argument for it indeed having a happy outcome.

It's not what a movie is about, it's how it is about it.

This movie is largely an intentional comedy.

Oh no, when Sebastian(?) falls in love with Annette the movie became a comedy to me. I don't think I've ever laughed this hard at a movie's climax ever before.

The main performances were too weak for "hilarious". Funny-ish. Selma Blair / Cecile was the saving grace, otherwise it would have been a switch off.

It seems really weird and contrived until you do some research and find out it's actually 18th century French erotica.

I think "evil" fits you. I found this film highly disturbing, though perhaps stretching credibility.

reply

I agree with you.

It’s the best kind of comedy - subtle, witty, and stemming from the characters, their cynical POVs, and their messed up relationships. It’s got great lines brilliantly delivered by the actors, but it never goes for obvious b’dum tish! gags. It’s all in the little details.

It also resonates because there’s undeniable truth to these despicable characters and the predatory world they inhabit. Sex and status are important to human beings, deny it as they might, especially in the snake pit of high school.

The fact that a film like this would never get made in today’s sanitised PC dystopia makes it even more special.
