Too expensive?

Finally getting around to watching the series on Netflix. It's just as good as any other Masterpiece Mystery, the Kenyan setting is very interesting, and I like the interplay between Tyburn and Valentine. Was it just too expensive to keep producing?

Not sure why they quit filming. Good show, just started watching on Netflix.

I never heard why it was stopped, though perhaps 3 was all they ever planned to do. Filming in Zimbabwe (Or "Zim" as a friend of mine calls it who lives in Harare) probably had its own complications, with that charmer Mugabe around!

The highly likely reason could be that its producer company Carlton TV got into all manner of controversial problems about 1998 and had major fines I think costing millions--so that certainly had to have SOME bearing on productions being made at that time as HOTS was.

Carlton itself sort of ceased to exist in its original form about the time this show aired, and became folded into ITV in about 2002. Though not sure why that precluded ITV not picking up the show? Though by then Eve was onto another job.

Trevor Eve went right from this into his long-running and top notch "Waking the Dead" series, so I always presumed that was also a possible reason no more HOTN were made.

So glad it's on Netflix now, as I've become reacquainted with this great series that has been resurrected and a new generation can see it.

Saw it first back in the day on perhaps on A&E when A&E actually used to air "arts and entertainment" and carried alot of British shows (!!) before it was bought out and became a low life trash receptacle for tv programming. Or it might have appeared on PBS back in 1999. Cannot recall.

Either way, it was riveting then and it really has stood the test of time hasn't it?

Perhaps it's the 1931 setting that makes it rather timeless.

One of the former producers taught at the local university in the broadcasting department when I was finishing my degree, and I asked him about it, but never got a straight on answer.

I think someone here or on some fansite mentioned something about the changing political climate where they were shooting.

Although the fines thing you mention seems to make more sense.
