Does anyone know the name of the song that the girl sings to the old dying man? I loved the song and thought it was so touching. The part where she goes to the river village and the women are singing the song and she places the blossoms in the water, wow, loved it!
Thanks for the info. Hadn't found much info on them. Do you have any of the lyrics or music to the songs, they're very beautiful. I am fascinated at how so many different cultures can produce such wonderful song.
Thank you so much! I just wish I could find this on a cd or something. I bet it's out there waiting to be found. I wish this show was on IFC again soon so I could tape it.
The song is called "Do Ai" in Vietnamese and written by the most prominent song writer ever, Pham Duy. Like most Vietnamese folk songs, love is always expressed very subtly. The song writer uses nature's imagery to express his feelings while never dares to be so direct with them as they may be regarded as vulgar or unrefined.
The song is written from a man's point of view (even though most Vietnames folk songs are sung by women) and the translated lyrics posted earlier are incomplete and also incorrect. My guess is that the filmmakers changed the lyrics to fit better with their story. I'm not poetic so I'm just going to translate literally the incomplete part:
Can anyone on Earth ever know how many stalks are in a rice field? How many bends are in a river? How many layers are in a cloud?
Can anyone sweep leaves of a forest? So that I can tell the wind to shake trees no more.
Can anyone know where is the wind? When the wind is often away, When the wind is at home.
Can anyone know at what age is the old moon? So that I speak up Speak up the sweet words for my love.
Can anyone sleep without dreaming? I know that my love dreams often.
In middle of a still quiet night the moon comes down and waits on the porch In middle of a still quiet night I arrive at the shore of love.
Can anyone find someone's heart? I know that she has found my heart. So that I sing for life to become poetic. So that I can offer to the one of my dream.
Here's a link to the song which I've uploaded. It's sung by the most popular singer right now. Her name is Nhu Quynh and she currently lives in the US.
yes, but do you have the vietnamese lyrics written with english letters so we can all sing along? ive been trying to listen and type what they sound like but im having trouble on the floating womens market.
hte problem with those lyrics is that in the beginning of the movie where she sings that song in the lotus pond, those lyrics don't match the subtitles on the screen. when the floating market is singing those songs, there are no subtitles (on youtube) but if you listen closely you can hear that its the same song just continued on
