i couldn't figure out why he drilled into his head and what happened afterwards
Same question here. Was the drilling a hallucination? Or did he really die and the ending shot with Jenna was all in his head?
I know it really doesn't have to do much with the movie, its whole point is that some answers always remain mysteries, but curiosity just gets the better of me.

Is wasn't a hallucination. The final scene is him sitting on the park bench unable to answer the math question, (because of the trepanning) as he sits in peace gazing up at the tree.
Yes it was mentioned that trepanning has been used for centuries maybe even longer, ie Neanderthals did it supposedly according to wikipedia, but it wasn't him imagining it - he really did put a hole in his head. And fwiw this was a good movie, it was really to me just more about mental illness and mental anguish that about math or being a math genius. But hmmm math does explain everything, it really does.
