would rather see them get back together

i will say that i thought the whole movie set me up for the ultimate goal of getting the two lead characters back together, like a major quest established at the outset which sets the direction of the movie. (not saying a movie HAS to operate this way, but it is kinda understood as a rule of storytelling, unless you are dealing with something really offbeat). anyway, that is how it struck me.

so when it ended with him rejecting her at the awards, which SHOULD HAVE BEEN his original goal achieved, it threw me. i understand why and all that bla bla. not looking for an explanation here. just saying, the payoff was sort of a bait and switch. the twist-payoff maybe does add a certain flavor, as you guys here point out.

but for me, it was less satisfying than it would have been seeing them back together at the end.

i cite the first bourne ending, and james lifting helens ear ring in the elevator (sliding doors) as satisfying payoffs.

see, they had me through the whole movie... wanting the two main chars to reunite, only to deprive me of seeing it. darn!

and for those of you who will say i can't handle a non-happy reunited ending, two of my faves are english patient and lovers of the arctic circle. so there.

I can understand that you wanted Victor and Sylvia back together, and I don't think that would have been a bad ending. Just let me tell you what I think the movie may have been saying and this is not a put down, but a different perspective.

For one thing, fate, God, destiny, the Creator, or whatever you want to call the force that may or may not control the universe, knows better what is best for us than we do. Maybe Victor was suppose to understand that he was selfish and that maybe, even though they both obviously loved each other, they didn't really belong together. In one part, Sylvia does state that her and Victor always were good friends and maybe that is what it was suppose to be. It is possible that Victor was destined to be with Louisa, who I liked, and they were to live their lives.

Sylvia and Victor both were suffering the "what if..." scenario and those are never good. The "garbage men" tried to explain to Victor that he had to move on and then let him see for himself why since obviously he wasn't going to on his own. Fate that Dave and Sylvia would meet was just that because in spite of Victor's efforts, they ended up together anyway. Maybe Sylvia was suppose to learn that maybe her and Dave were not meant to be together and the "garbage men" told her that better things were in store and that everything would work it's way out.

One thing I do sort of agree with you on is that Sylvia and Victor did belong in each others lives, I just don't think as a couple, but as best friends. I know this from experience because in high school, etc some of my best friends were old boyfriends and our relationship was better for it.

I don't think Victor rejected Sylvia so much as tried to explain that some things are just not meant to be. Victor was very compassionate about his approach and I never thought that meant that he didn't care about her, he just found someone who he had more in common with. You have to admit, a professional woman like Sylvia and a dreamy type "chase your dreams" type of man like Victor are probably wrong suited. Louisa was a writer and shared Vic's creative nature. Dave was more serious and fit Sylvia's nature. Sylvia could have worked it out with Dave eventually, but was impatient.

I don't think she went back in time. For one thing, the "garbage men" did not take her to the dump and I believe the "enchantment" had ended when Victor told Sylvia about the other life and maybe she realized that she could be happy with Dave or someone else.

That is my take, but I would agree that having them back together would have been a good ending, if it meant that Louisa found her soul mate too. I really didn't want Louisa to get hurt, she was nice.

I do hope she goes back to David and learns to love him and let go of the past. She's a shrink and she can't talk to him? She keeps all that inside and then just dumps on him? She's not a very good doctor then. David is very obviously in love with her. Victor is happy with Louise.

I would never go back in time to return a boyfriend. The past is in the past. Life goes on. (Maybe it's just because I've never been able to forget and forgive.)

Also, if I was Sylvia, I'd pick David over Victor any day. He's just my type :)
