Courtney unintentionally came off as the only likable party..

In her scene at the gala, Courtney handled being hounded by the --hole moron film crew pretty well. Am I the only one who thinks she came off as rather charming and likable? Every time she was on camera, she was warm, good-natured, and positive.

Everyone else in the film was either butthurt or an obvious liar (the "drug buddy", the "nanny", the "detective"). The only subjects that REALLY had any insight and seemed like honest people were Kurt's aunt and ex-girlfriend.

Everyone involved in this movie should be ashamed of themselves.

Your post was spot on, top to bottom.

I agree with you. I'm a fan of both Kurt and Courtney and their respective music, and I've caught this documentary on TV a couple of times and just watched it for the sake of it having to do with them. It's totally bull****, and like you said, everyone else in it comes off as a drugged out street person.

The nanny and her friend in the basement? What the hell was that about? They both seemed drunk and the girl seemed to be putting up an act.

Oh, and Courtney's dad— oh my god, I mean, I know she's said he's crazy, but you can really witness the crazy in his interview. "I can see her next thoughts, I know exactly how her mind works!".

The whole documentary implodes on itself if by nothing more than the fact that the person they're trying to disparage seems to be the only moderately decent one in the entire film.

10000% agree. It's really a shame that this film uses the "Kurt and Courtney" moniker the way it does, because the title is deserving of an epic rock biopic one day (or, God forbid, a decent documentary on the couple that doesn't feel the need to demonize one to worship another).

In regards to the nanny thing, that's my biggest issue with this thing: The director seemed to simply follow any lead thrown his way (a shady note on his windshield? Really?) and throw 8 minutes of screen time at them. What a mess.

I don't think you were paying attention. He started the documentary with no focus, just wanting to go where the story took him. He investigated the conspiracy theories, and by two thirds into the documentary, he flat out said that he no longer believed the conspiracy theories. He wasn't trying to "disparage" Courtney Love, he was just trying to get an interview with her, so that she could tell her side of the story, but she did everything in her power to not only refuse to do so, but make sure the film was shut down.

"Nothing says "OBEY ME" like a severed head on a fence post."

I don't think so. Courtney came across as fake, affected, crazed with delusions of grandeur. And her comment that she loved her band, yeah right. Didn't Courtney later admit that prompted by her producer (it's never her fault) she bullied & schemed her drummer into quitting? I wouldn't put anything past her, backstabber that she is.

That said what a monster of a dad Courtney has. Looks like he's the one with the major problem & can't let go of the fact that Courtney has disowned him. Ironic that he's the one that needed someone to give him "tough love" and a "good kick in the a**, not the other way around. Don't get me wrong. Courtney may have not been the ideal daughter but with a dad like that, no wonder she turned out the way she did. Think she inherited his dna unfortunately.

Courtney Love came off sympathetically because Broomfield's documentary was so blatantly biased against her. She may be trash, but it's difficult to watch a documentary maker with a pre-conceived agenda bullying his subject.

Really strange doco, imo.

Indeed, as another has said here, every person involved in the making of this film should be ashamed of themselves. This may well be the most immoral film I have ever seen. It is purely disgusting. If I ever bump into Nick Broomfield in public I will promptly punch him in the face and say "that was for making 'Kurt and Courtney'".

Have to disagree. Many working in and around the L.A. entertainment industry during the entire Kurt/Courtney melodrama, especially in the weeks when he left town leading up to his suicide will tell you there was intense scrutiny that Courtney was not only flagrantly abusing Kurt beyond just using and manipulating him this way and that, but that she really had it out for him. This is a woman who had no qualms about shouting and screaming at Kurt in full view of public, in restaurants, outside bars, on the street, wherever. Love is a sick, mentally defective woman. Hospitality workers were terrified of her. Bartenders and servers in restaurants went out of their way to *not* serve her because no matter how hard they worked or how polite and congenial they strived to be, they would get screamed at and even attacked. A girlfriend of mine who worked at Spago once had the displeasure of serving Love when she came in just before "Live Through This" was released and ended up getting hammered by her purse repeatedly like a crazy bag lady on speed.

Courtney Love, were it not for her association with Kurt and using him as a wealth magnet, would today either be dead or a crazy bag lady on Skid Row. She was ugly then, even uglier now. She was and is the most repulsive and disgusting performer at the top echelon of the L.A. music industry. You couldn't find anyone from the riot grrrl era (like Bikini Kill, Toby Vail, Team Dresch, Fifth Column, etc) who'd even be willing to say anything remotely positive about Love, let alone interact with her in person.

No legitimate or credible documentary filmmaker is going to attempt an unbiased or "neutral" treatment of Love for the simple reason that it is not only impossible, but more so, totally unproductive. In this type of documentary, there has to be a bias to some extent. This is basic film school. To use a rather extreme example, take the case of John Wayne Gacy or Jeffrey Dahmer. A neutral or unbiased doc of such extremely repugnant and reprehensible personalities would be futile and would inadvertently come across as sympathetic to them.

Broomfield is a brilliant documentarian because he understands exactly how to make a proper documentary and how much bias to interject given the subject. The research he and his team did prior to filming the doc revealed just how evil so many people who knew and had worked with Courtney Love considered her to be. When you've got dozens upon dozens of people all who knew, worked with, lived with Love saying that she is pure, unadulterated evil and most likely was in some way responsible for Kurt's death, whether directly or indirectly, then you won't find any veteran documentary filmmakers who are going to strive for neutrality. They're going to go after the subject to one extent or another, and fortunately for us, Broomfield is one of the few who is willing to push such reprehensible subjects to their limit.

You'll notice any documentaries attempting a more neutral or "fair" stance concerning Love simply come across as favoring her and ending up losing any credibility with the audience, except among Love's psycho fanatics.

In summary, Courtney Love is disgusting filth. Broomfield is genius.

Agree completely with metaspheres. Love, was on her best behavior in front of the camera. There are a lot of questions to be answered in this story.
