Can good actors save bad movies?

Preamble: if you want to know what it means if an actor says he/she only did it because they needed the money, look no further than the talent wasted in Judas kiss.

Superb Alan and Emma cannot save this junk. Pearls before swines etc...

Al Pacino was in some pretty poor fare too, but I cannot think of any movie that turned out as pityful as Judas kiss. But maybe I'm mistaken? If not, is Al Pacino the better actor? Or was he just lucky?

Personally - I thought Judas Kiss was a good film, but in relation to your question - yes - Nicole Kidman saved The Golden Compass.

"Who is the bookman? And what right does he have to order me about?!" - Angela Lansbury

I respectfully disagree - I enjoyed this film.
I enjoyed Alan and Emma's performances even more!

Actually, Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman were the worst thing about this film. Thompson hamming it up, yet again, like she did in that terrible film she did with first husband Kenneth Brannagh and Rickman looks like he wants to be anywhere but in front of the camera.

catpeee...your opinion is worth pee. Emma Thompson never HAMS IT UP. She's a first-rate actor, all the time. In fact, she is hardly even arguably the best acting has to offer...among men or women. Maybe this material was weak, but she is absolutely NEVER weak.

You don't know a thing about acting.

RICKMAN. I don’t WANT this job!

Rickman IS the movie. So are Gugino and Til Schweiger. I just bought the last new Region 1 DVD available of it on the face of the Earth on EBay. That’s how invested in it I am. How many movies Rickman IS? Lessee: Galaxy Quest, Die Hard, every fucking Harry Potter wankfest . . .

Daniel Day-Lewis saved Gangs of New York in my opinion.

"No kitty! This is my pot pie!"

Great question and I believe they can as long as the script is decent enough. Story is king and if the dialogue serves a purpose at every beat, then yes, a good actor can save a movie.

I haven't seen this movie, but with Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman, 2 of my favourite actors', it's stirred my interest enough to give it a viewing.

Nothing saved Gangs of New York. The Mayo Clinic could not have saved it.

reply

The tremendous over acting of every one involved made this movie a hoot and well worth watching and rewatching
