Jim Jarmusch Ripoff

Jim Jarmusch has been making short films over the past 17 called Coffee and Cigarettes. These shorts have little relationship to the PTA film, but come on he could have come up with a more creative title. I doubt a film fan like PTA could be unaware of Jarmusch's work.

Either way, Jarmusch recently complimented P.T.A. in an interview and gave him "special thanks" at the end of Coffee & Cigarettes.

"They were both making short films at the time and had not made a feature film yet"

Yikes. Jarmusch had done many feature films. Stranger than Paradise won quite a few awards in 1984 at Cannes Film Fest and Sundance and other places. seems like you need to check your asssertions before running your mouth. and how do you know pta hadn't seen the Jarmusch shorts? can't be sure but i bet PTA was either biting or referencing the jarmusch joints.

alright, i hate to feel like the Jarmusch cop, but he directed 4 movies before anderson did cigarettes and coffee. they are: Permanent Vacation (which was his first movie and i think it was a school project so i can see if you don't want to count it), Stranger than paradise, down by law, mystery train, and night on earth.

I think you meant he wouldn't bite of something that small, and unless you are personal friends with the man your personal assurance doesn't sway me. And just because it's small doesn't mean he didn't bite it. Small things can give people ideas that they want to run with.

in any event, they are both great filmakers and they both borrow/pay homage to/bite off of other works. I just saw Branded to Kill. Great trippy movie that has a lot of ghost dog in it.

I know this strand is a few months old, but is it possible two bright filmakers could have possibly seen the title worthiness of a common connection, like say... coffee and cigarettes?

Who is this Jim Jarmusch? Paul Thomas Anderson?? Frankly they sound made up.

reply

icky,

They are made up. This entire thread and the one for Jarmusch are fictional creations. There are no such people, and the movies listed under their respective names have never been made.

reply

Mr. Olive, you need serious medical attention. This thread of discussion quite obviously is not made up. Are you still cut about being taken out of the Resorvoir Dogs film? Seemingly random text formatting will only get you so far in this town.

reply

icky,

How do you get red text? I don't know the code for it.

reply

You're awesome.

Um, I think they both ripped off the invention of coffee and of cigarettes, those two things had never been paired before they came along and peanut butter and chocolated them

Hahahahaha. Is that Will Ferrel in Anchorman? Or maybe The Simpsons? Regardless I've heard it before and laughed at whoever said it.

reply

I think they both ripped off Otis Redding.

They weren't released under that title untill 2004 i think? From wiki:2004 saw the eventual release of Coffee and Cigarettes, a collection of eleven short films of characters sitting around drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes that had been filmed by Jarmusch over the course of the previous two decades. The first vignette, "Strange to Meet You", had been shot for and aired on Saturday Night Livein 1986, and paired Roberto Benigni with comedian Steven Wright. This had been followed three years later by "Twins", a segment featuring actors Steve Buscemi and Joie and Cinqué Lee, and then in 1993 with the Short Film Palme d'Or-winning "Somewhere in California", starring musicians Tom Waits and Iggy Pop.

Have you ever heard of an homage? He took the basic idea of Coffee & Cigarettes and made it into something completely different as a tribute. To simply say that it's a rip-off makes it sound like you haven't even seen PTA's film. It's not a creative title, but I think it was a way to admit Jarmusch's influence in a way that would be obvious to people that know the director and unobtrusive to those that don't.
