The Defenders of the Earth have escaped again.....Sire

My favourite character in the Defenders of the Earth is the camp-as-a-Christmas-Tree robot who swans around Ming like a gay wraith exulting in all the bad news he has to tell him.

He says things like:
"The Defenders of the Earth have escaped again..." and then he adds in the most sarcastic possible voice, "....Sire"

Why hasn't Ming had him nuked?
Is he in love?

I can only assume that the voice actors in question wanted to make sure the two robots Octon and Garax sounded very different, so Garax sounded really aggressive, while Octon sounded, well, you're right, a bit camp. I never thought of it in that way until a friend of mine pointed it out about 6-8mths ago, and I've not been able to take Octon seriously ever since!

I had never heard of this cartoon before. I ordered it just to watch something different and while I don't care for these generic cookie cutter 80s cartoons, sometimes I just want to see something different, even if it is like other stuff out there.

DOE (love the initials) reminds me of GI Joe, Jem or Transformers, other cartoons I didnt like back then, but again, I'd never heard of this show.

I'd heard of Flash Gordon, the Phantom and Mandrake (Phantom and Mandrake appeared together in an old Saturday Superstar Movie entitled Popeye and the Man Who Hated Laughter), but again, never heard of this show.

So I ordered the DVD, not sure what it would be like, . . . oh, it was the 80s.

While the characters have been below two dimensional, that robot has been one of the most amusing standouts to me (and that an emotionless, non-humanoid robot with usually one line at a time can stand out, doesnt say much for this show).

My guess is Auchton, was that his name? Auchton was supposed to be a monotone, unemotional robot, like Spock, of course, but yea, there is a definite sarcastic attitude with those '. . . . . sire' additions.

As well as the high pitched male voice. Yea, it sounds effeminately male.

A similar robot and now I can't recall his name, was on the Jetsons in the sixties, with the typical Daws Butler voice, very mechanical, who sucked up to Spacely, then would draw the guys into a game of cards and blame George when Spacely returned.

I THINK this is what they were attempting with Auchton, but again, it missed its mark.
