Why?

The poster meant "Why would a controller want to know how many people are on board?" Whether it's 30 or 300, the controller is still going to work as hard to save them, no?

That's basically it. That information isn't for the controllers use, but as they are the ones talking to the pilots they gather that information and pass it on to the emergency services people.
