Let's face it, this is technically a bad movie

People like it because it's directed with style and flair, and the characters/performances are quirky and interesting to watch. But the plot makes no goddamn sense, and the implausibility factor of the twist is through the roof.

Having said all that, it's still in my top 100 movies based on the positive aspects. But it irritates me that people pretend like the movie is genius on all fronts when really the basic plot is full of holes and makes no goddamn sense.

I never got the appeal of this movie, it's baffling to me.

reply

It's like I said, it's directed with flair and it has a quirkiness that makes people feel cool for saying it's their favorite movie. Not enough to warrant a place in the top 10 movies of all time.

reply

Flair? Really?

Flair and 'quirkiness' (whatever you mean by this VAGUE term) have NOTHING to do with why people like this movie, or people are stupider than even I dare guess.

This movie has depth and layers to it, so you can watch it multiple times, you can enjoy it from multiple perspectives.

It has humor, interesting story, a good point (multiple ones, really) about men, materialism, consumerism and how people are not supposed to live this way, how hollow people's lives have become (now more true than ever), how people are starting to get actually sick, both mentally and physically (but of course mostly spiritually), of this 'consume, consume, consume!!'-culture that forces them to too narrow lives that they can't stand.

Suicides are on the rise in the modern world, divorces as well - marriages are down, and love is nowhere to be found. People are more attached to ideas and tech than each other and nature.

This world gets sicker all the time, and this movie points it out poignantly. There are so many reasons to like this movie. I think it's a bit silly in many ways, and a little bit misandristic as well (protecting women from being punched against wall so their teeth fall out is a cowardly cop-out this movie's makers made - they should TOTALLY have women in the fight club to be beaten to a pulp like the men are - the problem is, women live in Ivory Tower, and can't even begin to understand the misery of having to live in a 'man's world', so it wouldn't work)..

As you can see, this movie can provoke lots of philosphical discussion about the world, existence, humanity, genders, corporations, etc. etc. .. how many other movies can provoke this kind of discussion?

Are you seriously accusing the movie of subtle misandry because there's only men in fight club?

reply

It’s really a black comedy with some zany, screwball elements thrown in. Probably why it doesn’t need to make sense, but it suffers from being put on a pedestal by edgy Gen-Xers.

reply

Disagree. It's very cleverly edited to contain the twist for first time viewers, and at the same time allowing for enhancement for repeat viewers. Technically, It's most glaring weakness is the soundtrack which hasn't aged well.

reply

it's very well written and well acted

reply

Nothing wrong with the soundtrack either...

reply

lol the soundtrack is probably one of the few things about this movie that's aged well.

It’s a great movie. For example, over 20 years after its release we still talk about it. Everyone knows of it.

Name another movie in the last 10 years that will have that kind of recognition. You can toss 90% of them as they’re all CG comic book garbage. That leaves a few drama best film nominees of which I can’t name any of the top of my head.

You can say that about pretty much any movie, they all have flaws, and if you approach a movie from the perspective of 'this is a bad movie, I just have to find out how', you will be successful eventually. There is no perfect movie.

This movie is a bit silly comedy on ths surface, but it does contain MANY elements and layers that separate it from the usual movies. You can see it as cringy macho-fest with no value.

You can also see it as criticism against consumerism, materialism, corporations and the scary world we actually live in, when corporations have so much power, and individual men are forced to live lives of quiet desperation and often depression, anxiety and suicide.

It's not men's fault, it's this world that hates men while celebrating women - no matter how you measure it, the result is the same. Women have it much easier in every area, except maybe 'monthly bleeding'. They also have victim status and zillion simps defending their honor, and exclusive right to complain.

This movie is not revered because of the things you mentioned, people like it because it works on many levels. There's a relatively organic, clever twist that the movie even hints at from time to time, very often.

Brad Pitt's performance is extremely charismatic, 'cool' and interesting, and he's always fun to watch in a movie, when he's given something crazy to do.

People like this movie for various reasons, because this movie GIVES people multiple reasons to like it. The underlying message of pointing out how hollow and materialistic most people's lives are, is a very interesting one. This movie is very rewatchable, and you can understand it from multiple perspectives. On one hand, it points out how miserable men's lives have become compared to historical lives.

On another hand, you can feel the pain of men without purpose.

Then there's the perspective (are we in legs now?) of women can be really crazy, and yet this world worships them, but don't give men a chance.

There is a message that resonates with a lot of people, and the message is spot on, which is why it's appealing to many. It's also entertaining on a scene to scene level. It's delivered too heavy handed, IMO, which is why it feels dated so much. I think it's a good film, but it shouldn't be anyone's favorite film, because it's undeniably flawed.

reply

Absolutely 100% perfect movie.

reply

But the plot makes no goddamn sense, and the implausibility factor of the twist is through the roof.

These things don't make it a bad movie.
